James Paul "Jim" Montgomery (born January 24, 1955 in Madison , Wisconsin ) is a former American swimmer .

Life

Jim Montgomery became the first swimmer to swim the 100 m freestyle in under 50 seconds (49.99).

Montgomery was at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal Olympic champion in the 100 m freestyle (49.99) and with the two relays of the USA over 4 × 100 m and 4 × 200 m freestyle. In 1973 he had already become world champion over 100 m and 200 m freestyle in Belgrade . From 1973 to 1977 Montgomery was a student at Indiana University where he trained under coach James Counsilman .

Jim Montgomery swam a total of 11 world records, 7 of them in relay disciplines.

In 1986 he was inducted into the international swimming pool 's hall of fame .
