Malcolm Eadie Champion (born November 12, 1883 in Kingston , Norfolk Island , † July 26, 1939 in Auckland ) was a New Zealand swimmer . He was the first Olympic champion in his country. Until Danyon Loader's Olympic victory in 1996, he remained the only New Zealand swimmer to win an Olympic gold medal.
In 1912 he was nominated for the combined delegation of Australia and New Zealand that competed as Australasia in the 1912 Summer Olympics . He was eliminated in the semifinals in the 400-meter freestyle . In the 1500-meter freestyle race , he was able to reach the final, but did not finish his race there. After he had set a new world record in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay race together with Cecil Healy , Leslie Boardman and Harold Hardwick , the relay set it again in the final and became Olympic champion.
In 1990 he was inducted into the newly formed New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame .
