Arai Shigeo

Arai Shigeo ( Japanese 新 井 茂雄 ; born August 8, 1916 in Shizuoka , Shizuoka Prefecture , † July 19, 1944 in Myanmar ) was a Japanese swimmer .

Together with Yusa Masanori , Sugiura Shigeo and Taguchi Masaharu , he was Olympic champion with the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin . He also won the bronze medal in the 100 m freestyle.

Arai Shigeo died as a soldier in the Japanese army in Burma.

In 1997 he was inducted into the international swimming pool 's hall of fame .
