Thomas Rupprath (born March 16, 1977 in Neuss , Germany ) is a former German swimmer .

Career

Thomas Rupprath learned to swim at the age of 7 in the Neuss swimming club . He is still a member of the club today, but now starts for the SC Empor Rostock 2000, before that Rupprath started for the Wasserfreunde Hannover. Since September 2009 he has also had the right to start for SV Würzburg 05, with whose team he won the German team championship for the first time. In 1990 he took part in the German Youth Championships for the first time. He achieved his first major victories at the German Youth Championships in 1994 when he won the 100 m back and 200 m medley competitions. He was able to repeat these successes in 1995 and also won the 200 m back , 100 m & 200 m butterfly . In the following years there were also successes on an international level. The first of these was the European title over 100 m butterfly on the short course (25 m) in 1996. After he was able to set some world records in 2002 and 2003 (50 m & 100 m back, 100 m butterfly and 100 m medley), he won his first world title at the world championships in Barcelona with a new world record over 50 m back. In 2004 he was also able to win this title on the short course. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens he was successful together with Steffen Driesen , Jens Kruppa and Lars Conrad in the 4 × 100 m medley competition and won the silver medal in record time in Europe (3: 33.62 min). He also took part in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , albeit unsuccessfully. He commented on his own performance with "It had nothing to do with competitive sport".

In 2005, Rupprath was voted Swimmer of the Year in Germany ahead of Steffen Deibler , who placed second . Rupprath ended his career on June 26, 2010.

From January 14th to 29th, 2011 he took part in the reality show I'm a Star - Get Me Out of Here! of the TV broadcaster RTL , which he finished in third place.

During the Olympic Games in London , he and Matthias Stach commented on the swimming competitions for the TV channel Eurosport . Rupprath did this during the World Swimming Championships in Kazan in 2015 and in Budapest in 2017 .

In April 2016 Rupprath took part in the big ProSieben Völkerball Championship 2016 . In June 2016, he appeared on the RTL show Look me in the eye - celebrities under hypnosis .
