Stefan Herbst (born May 17, 1978 in Leipzig ) is a former German swimmer . He was European champion with German freestyle relays and third in the world championship twice.

Career

Herbst is the brother of the successful swimmer Sabine Klenz (born June 27, 1974), who was also born in Leipzig . He is a member of the SSV swimming club in Leutzsch . During his active time he was trained by his mother Eva Herbst . Since January 1, 2017, he has been the state trainer of the Schleswig-Holstein Swimming Association.

Olympic games

At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney he was fourth in the German 4 × 100 m freestyle relay (with Torsten Spanneberg , Christian Tröger and Stephan Kunzelmann ) in 3: 17.77 minutes. With the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay (with Stefan Pohl , Christian Keller and Christian Tröger) he finished sixth in 7: 20.19 minutes.

At the following Olympic Games in Athens in 2004 , he was eighth in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay (with Jens Schreiber , Lars Conrad and Torsten Spanneberg). He missed the final in the 200 m freestyle .

World championships

He had his first international assignment at the 1998 World Championships in Perth , where he was fourth in the 4 × 100 freestyle relay and in 4th place in the 4 × 200 freestyle relay he was used in the preliminary stages.

At the 2001 World Championships in Fukuoka , he won the bronze medal in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay (with Torsten Spanneberg, Lars Conrad and Sven Lodziewski ) in 3: 17.52 minutes. The German relay team had to give way to the Australian and Dutch relay teams with star swimmers Ian Thorpe and Pieter van den Hoogenband and hit the second place just under 3 seconds.

Two years later, at the 2003 World Championships in Barcelona , he achieved the bronze medal in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay (together with Johannes Oesterling , Lars Conrad and Christian Keller) in 7.14.02 minutes behind Australia and the United States. With the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay (with Jens Thiele , Torsten Spanneberg and Lars Conrad) he was only fifth, but the relay swam a new German record in 3: 15.98 minutes .

At the 2005 World Championships in Montreal he was sixth with the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay and seventh with the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay. The 4 × 100 m layer relay, in which he swam in the lead, came in fourth. In his individual start in the 200 m freestyle he just missed the final and finished 11th in 1: 48.72 minutes.

The 2007 World Championships in Melbourne were disappointing for him overall. He was eliminated in the 200 m freestyle with 1: 50.25 minutes and with the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay (with Paul Biedermann , Benjamin Starke and Lars Conrad) he just missed the final and was ninth.

European championships

He celebrated his first international successes at the European Championships in Helsinki in 2000 . There he won the silver medal with the German 4 × 100 m freestyle relay (with Lars Conrad, Christian Tröger and Stephan Kunzelmann), just beaten by the Russian relay. With the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay (with Michael Kiedel , Christian Keller and Stefan Pohl) he also achieved silver in 7: 18.96 minutes, this time the German relay was beaten by Italy with a 2.5 second lead. In the individual, he was fifth in the 200 m freestyle in 1: 50.35 minutes.

His most successful international competition was to be the 2002 European Championships in Berlin . There he became European champion with the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay (with Lars Conrad, Torsten Spanneberg and Stephan Kunzelmann) in 3: 17.67 minutes and only eight hundredths of a second ahead of the Swedish relay. With the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay (with Moritz Rooms , Stefan Pohl and Lars Conrad) he won in 7: 17.59 minutes behind Italy the silver medal, with the 4 × 100 m medley relay (with Stev Theloke , Jens Kruppa and Thomas Rupprath) Bronze medal in 3: 37.05 minutes behind Russia and France . In the individual finals of the 200 m freestyle, he finished eighth in 1: 49.63 minutes.

At the 2004 European Championships in Madrid there were no German relays at the start because the DSV only sent a minimal team to Spain to prepare for the 2004 Olympic Games.

At the European Championships in Budapest in 2006 , he was disappointingly only fifth with the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay and only seventh with the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay.

German championships

Stefan Herbst, who competes for SSV Leutzsch , was German champion in the 200 m freestyle four years in a row between 2000 and 2003 . He increased his performance from 1: 49.75 minutes over 1: 49.65 minutes to 1: 49.27 minutes. In 2003 he was also German champion in the 100 m freestyle in a time of 49.64 seconds. With the 4 × 100 m layer relay of SSV Leutzsch he was also three times German champion (1999-2001). At the German Championships in 2004 , he came second in the 200 m freestyle behind Jens Schreiber. At the German Championships in 2006 he was third in the 100 m freestyle and had to let Marco di Carli go first.
