Career

Rafael Muñoz's first international success was winning the bronze medal over 50 meters and 100 meters butterfly at the 2008 European Swimming Championships in Eindhoven .

In Beijing at the 2008 Summer Olympics , he could not convince with 30th place over 100 meters butterfly.

In December of the same year he became vice-European champion over 100 meters and bronze medalist over 50 meters butterfly at the European short course championships in Rijeka . With the Spanish 4 × 50 meter layer relay, he was able to achieve seventh place in the final.

Rafael Muñoz received the greatest international attention in the spring of 2009 when he set a new world record over 50 meters butterfly at the Spanish swimming championships in Málaga, thus improving the almost four-year-old record of the South African Roland Schoeman . Ibid he pressed the European record of Milorad Čavić about 100 meters butterfly by a hundredth of a second. Almost 20 days later, he improved the same record in Montpellier , France, to 50.46 seconds.

In August 2010, Muñoz hit the headlines for missing three doping tests within 9 months. According to the regulations of the swimming federation FINA, this is punished with a ban of 2 months to two years, which means that his participation in the 2010 European Swimming Championships would not have been possible. However, the association accepted the apology that he did not show up for the tests only because of his "mental health". After he won gold in the 50 meter butterfly at the European Championships, the case received even more attention. While the FINA justified its action, the world doping agency WADA announced that it would still investigate the case and requested access to the documents.
