Lutz Wanja (born June 6, 1956 in Brandenburg an der Havel ) is a former swimmer of the GDR .
Career
Swimming career
In 1971, when he was still starting for ASK Vorwärts Rostock , he was GDR champion over 100 meters back . In the following year he competed for ASK Vorwärts Potsdam and took second place. After a third place in 1973, the runner-up title followed again in 1974. Between 1976 and 1978, the swimmer was GDR champion on this route three times in a row. On the 200-meter back distance, he took second place four times at the GDR championships from 1972 to 1975, three times behind his main competitor Roland Matthes . In 1976 he managed to beat Roland Matthes and Michael Tauber on this track and to take the title. In 1976 and 1977 Wanja was also GDR champion over the 200-meter layered course.
His international successes included a silver medal over 100 meters back and a bronze medal with the GDR's 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay at the 1974 European Championships in Vienna .
In 1977, at the European Championships in Jönköping , he was able to get another silver medal with the 4 × 100 meter layer relay.
In Belgrade at the swimming world championships in 1973 , he was third behind Roland Matthes and the American Mike Stamm over 100 meters back.
He could not win a medal at the Olympic Games , neither at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , where he took sixth place in the 100 meter back course, nor at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , where Wanja was fifth over 100 meters back.
Further career
After finishing his active career, he worked as a trainer at ASK Vorwärts Potsdam, where he looked after Uwe Daßler , Jens-Peter Berndt and Jörg Hoffmann , among others . He then worked as a swimming coach at SC Magdeburg . Since 2001 he has been working for the Brandenburg State Swimming Association as a full-time state base trainer Southwest and at the same time works as a junior trainer for the Brandenburg Water Friends. In 1988 he was awarded the Order Banner of Work Level I in the GDR for his success as a trainer .
Private
Wanja is married to the former swimmer Barbara Krause .
GDR doping
After a confession from Jörg Hoffmann, where he admits to having taken illegal performance-enhancing substances for the first time in 1988 , he confirms that his trainer at the time, Lutz Wanja, administered the anabolic steroid Oral-Turinabol to him.
