After a break of eight years, Afghanistan took part in the XXII. 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow for the eighth time in summer games. The entry of Soviet troops into the country eight months before the start of the Games was taken by 64 states as an opportunity to boycott.
A total of eleven Afghan athletes took part in the competitions. They competed in two sports.
