Spain took part in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow with a delegation of 155 athletes (146 men and 9 women) in 75 competitions in 18 sports.
The Spanish athletes won one gold, three silver and two bronze medals. Olympic champions were the sailors Miguel Noguer and Alejandro Abascal in the Flying Dutchman . Silver went to the men's hockey team, the canoeists Guillermo del Riego and Herminio Menéndez in a two-man kayak over 500 meters and the athlete Jorge Llopart in a 50 km walk. The bronze medal went to canoeists Herminio Menéndez and Luis Ramos in a two-person kayak over 1000 meters and the swimmer David López-Zubero over 100 meters butterfly. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the canoeist Herminio Menéndez.
