Hungary took part in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow with a delegation of 263 athletes (182 men and 81 women) in 151 competitions in 21 sports.

The Hungarian athletes won seven gold, ten silver and 15 bronze medals. In the medal table of the games, Hungary placed sixth. Olympic champions were the sports shooter Károly Varga in the prone position with a small- bore rifle, the swimmer Sándor Wladár over 200 meters back, the gymnast Zoltán Magyar on the pommel horse, the weightlifter Péter Baczakó in the middle heavyweight division, the wrestler Ferenc Kocsis in the welterweight division and Norbert Növényi in the Greek light heavyweight division -Roman style and the canoeists László Foltán and István Vaskuti in a two-man canoe over 500 meters. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the water polo player István Szívós junior .
