György Gedó [ ˈɟørɟ ˈɡɛdoː ] (born April 23, 1949 in Újpest , now part of Budapest ) was an Olympic champion in boxing and a coach.

From 1957 he competed with Békéscsabai Építők Előre , from 1965 with Magyar Pamut and from 1967 with Budapesti Vasas . Until the end he started in paper weight or light flyweight. From 1968 to 1980 he competed in the Hungarian selection. The first major success he achieved was the title of European Champion in Bucharest in 1969 , which he was able to defend at the 1971 European Championships in Madrid . He was a member of the Hungarian delegation at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City , 1972 in Munich , 1976 in Montréal and 1980 in Moscow . In 1972 he became Olympic champion, earning Hungary the 101st gold medal in the history of the Summer Olympics. He won the Hungarian championship eight times, in 1968 and 1972 he was voted boxer of the year. From 1976 he was the head coach of the boxing department of Vasas as an association boxer. In 1980, after the Olympic Games in Moscow, he ended his career as an active athlete.

After his retirement he was managing director of an inner-city catering company , security guard of the Népstadion and a furnishing company, later from 1994 to 1995 head coach of Kordax SE in Eger. From 1996 he was an advisor to the Hungarian Boxer Federation .
