Paul Garza Gonzales (born April 18, 1964 in Los Angeles ) is a retired American boxer .

amateur

Gonzalez was American champion in 1983 and won silver light flyweight at the Pan American Games . In 1984 in his hometown he was not only Olympic champion with a victory over Kim Kwang-sun , but was also awarded the Val Barker Cup as the technically best boxer of the tournament.

professional

Gonzales turned pro in 1985. For greater success in the professional camp, however, he lacked the clout. His only noteworthy victory came in 1986 against the undefeated Orlando Cañizalez, Cañizalez knocked him down, but lost on points.

In 1988 Gonzales lost his first title fight against the unremarkable Ray Medel on points. After Cañizalez had won the IBF bantamweight title, he was able to challenge him again to a rematch, losing the fight by abandoning it in the second round due to lacerations.

After two more losses against average opponents, he ended his career in 1991.
