Yan Barthelemí Varela (born March 5, 1980 in Arroyo Naranjo , Cuba ) is a Cuban boxer.
amateur
As an amateur southpaw Barthelemí boxed light flyweight. In 1998 he was able to beat Olympic champion Maikro Romero , but lost to him in other matches in 1999 and 2000. His compatriot Andry Laffita , another southpaw and runner-up in the flyweight division in 2005, he beat in each of their nine encounters.
In 2001 he won the world championship in this weight class in Belfast . In 2001 and 2002 he beat Yuriorkis Gamboa three times , who later became Olympic flyweight champion in 2004. In June 2002, he was World Cup winner when he beat the Kazakhs Kanat Abutalipov in the final. At the 2003 World Cup in Bangkok he was eliminated in the preliminary round against the Chinese Zhou Shiming (15:22). He achieved further tournament success in 2003 with victory at the Pan American Games and the Chemistry Cup . In 2005 he won the World Cup for the second time and for the third time in 2006.
His greatest success came when he won the gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens . Among other things, he defeated his rival Zhou Shiming in the semifinals and the Turkish Atagün Yalçınkaya in the final on points. At the 2005 World Cup in Mianyang , he failed in the quarterfinals with 10:12 points against the local hero Zhou Shiming.
Professional career
At the end of 2006, Barthelemí and two other Cuban Olympic champions from 2004, Odlanier Solís and Yuriorkis Gamboa , left the Cuban team during a training stay in Venezuela in preparation for the Pan American Games and was signed by the Hamburg boxing stable Arena Box-Promotion . His first professional match took place in April 2007 in Hamburg. A few months later, Barthelemí moved the center of his life to the USA . Since then he has lived and trained in Miami , where there is a large Cuban community in exile. However, he could not always convince in his fights even against build-up opponents and so surprisingly lost on August 1, 2008 against the unknown Ernie Marquez over six rounds on points. Barthelemí was deducted a point for holding on the last lap; without this loss of points the fight would have ended in a draw. He was able to win his next two fights again. Then, surprisingly, on October 10, 2009, he lost his second fight. This time he fought against the still undefeated American Jorge Diaz. After a fairly even fight, he was hit by a heavy left hook on the sixth lap and immediately knocked out.
In 2010 and 2011, Barthelemí beat Felix Flores, Roberto Benitez, Leshaun Blair and Francis Ruiz. As a result, he fought for another title chance, but lost on points against the undefeated Sahib Usarov in the fight for the WBO intercontinental title.
