Stephen "Steve" Muchoki (born December 23, 1956 ) is a former Kenyan boxer . He was world champion in 1978 and silver medalist at the 1974 world championships .

Career

amateur

Muchoki won in 1974 in the light flyweight , the Commonwealth Games in 1974 . In the same year he reached the final of the World Championships in Havana . In this he faced the Cuban Jorge Hernández , to whom he was defeated with 5-0 judge votes. Also in 1974 Muchoki was African champion in Kampala . In 1976 Muchoki was supposed to start at the Olympic Games in Montreal . However, due to the boycott of Kenya and fifteen other African countries, he was unable to participate.

At the 1978 World Championships , Muchoki was world champion after victories over Sami Buzoli from Yugoslavia (5: 0) and Jorge Hernández from Cuba (4: 1). He was the first Kenyan to win this title. In the same year he won the silver medal of the African Games after a narrow final defeat against Francis Musankabala from Zambia (3: 2) , but retaliated for this defeat in the final of the Commonwealth Games 1978 , which he won.

Professional career

1979 Muchoki turned pro in Denmark . With his seventh win in the seventh fight, he won the Commonwealth flyweight title. Four more wins later, he challenged WBA world champion Santos Laciar from Argentina in 1982 . He lost the fifteen round fight in the thirteenth round by TKO . Shortly afterwards, Muchoki also lost his Commonwealth title to Keith Wallace. Muchoki has now returned to Kenya and won the title of the African Boxing Union . He lost the title to Nana Konadu in 1986 , and after another defeat, retired in 1988 after 14 wins in 19 fights.
