Eric Griffin (born November 3, 1967 in Jasper (Tennessee) ) is an American boxer who was a double world light flyweight champion .

Amateurs

The southpaw Griffin became world light flyweight champion in Moscow in 1989 and in Sydney in 1991 , beating among others the Cuban Rogelio Marcelo . He achieved another tournament success at the Goodwill Games in Seattle in 1990 .

At the Olympic Games in Barcelona he lost as captain of the US team and top favorite in the round of 16 against local hero Rafael Lozano . The rating under the newly introduced computer system was 5 to 6, but each of the five judges and the five inspectors had Griffin up front on their own scorecards.

professional

He turned pro in 1992, but disappointed and lost four of his twenty fights. In addition to injuries, he also had drug problems. On May 31, 1997 he boxed against Jesus Chong, who had defeated him earlier in the fight, for the vacant WBO world championship in light flyweight and lost by technical knockout in the second round. He then ended his career.
