Rogelio Marcelo

Rogelio Marcelo García (born June 11, 1965 ) is a former Cuban boxer . Marcelo was a silver medalist at the 1986 Central American and Caribbean Games and the 1989 and 1991 World Cups , won the 1990 Central American and Caribbean Games and the 1991 Pan American Games, and won the 1992 Olympic Games .

Career

Marcelo was Cuban light flyweight champion (-48 kg) in 1989 and 1990.

Marcelo's first international championships were the 1986 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santiago de los Caballeros . Here he reached the final in the light flyweight division, but had to admit defeat to local hero Jesus Herrera (5-0). In 1988 Marcelo won the Central America and Caribbean Championships in Guatemala City . The following year he took part in the World Championships for the first time and after victories a. a. over Nschan Muntschjan , Soviet Union (23:20), the final. In this he faced Eric Griffin , USA , to whom he was defeated with 17:13 points.

In 1990 Marcelo started unsuccessfully at the Goodwill Games Seattle , but won the Central American and Caribbean Games in Mexico City . The following year he won the Pan American Games in Havana and again won the silver medal at the world championships . Marcelo defeated Daniel Petrow , Bulgaria (29:19) in the semifinals , but lost again in the final against the American Eric Griffin (36:18). In 1992 Marcelo took part in the Olympic Games in Barcelona and, after victories over Mfamasibili Tibonisele Mnisi, Swaziland (RSC 3rd), Erdenentsogt Tsogtjargal, Mongolia (14: 2), Rafael Lozano , Spain (11: 3), surprisingly reached Griffin had thrown the tournament, and Roel Velasco , Philippines (RSC 1st), the final.
