Roel Velasco

Roel Velasco (born June 26, 1972 in Negros Occidental ) is a retired Filipino boxer .

In 1992 Velasco was Asian champion in light flyweight (-48 kg). In the same year he also took part in the Olympic Games in Barcelona and achieved after victories over James Wanene, Kenya (16: 1), Rajendra Prasad, India (15: 6), and Rowan Williams, United Kingdom (7: 6), the semifinals. In this he faced the Cuban Rogelio Marcelo , whom he had to admit defeat in the first round. Velasco thus won the Olympic bronze medal.

After the Olympic Games, Velasco lost its national supremacy to its younger brother Mansueto Velasco . Only in 1997 did he take part in an international championship again. At the World Championships in Budapest he beat u. a. Rafael Lozano , Spain (+4: 4), before losing 9: 1 points to the Cuban Maikro Romero in the final .

Since retiring from boxing, Velasco has served as a Petty Officer First Class soldier in the Naval Forces of the Philippines . At the same time he is the coach of the Philippine boxing team.
