Brahim Asloum ( Arabic إبراهيم اسلوم; Born January 31, 1979 in Bourgoin-Jallieu ) is a former French boxer .
amateur
Asloum's ancestors come from Algeria . At the French championships, Asloum finished third as a flyweight in 1998 and second in 1999. In 2000 he finally won the national championship title in light flyweight. He took part in the amateur world championships in Houston in 1999 , but lost in the third round against the American Brian Viloria , who eventually also won the world title. Even at the European Championships in May 2000 in Tampere he had little success, he lost in the second fight against the Russian Sergei Kazakow . Kazakov lost in the final against Valery Sidorenko, Vladimir Sidorenko's brother .
Asloums greatest success as an amateur he succeeded in 2000 in the Olympic Games of Sydney . There he won the gold medal in the light flyweight (up to 48 kg) by beating the Spaniard Rafael Lozano in the final, after beating the reigning world champion Brian Viloria 6: 4 in the round of 16.
professional
Brahim has been a professional boxer since 2001. In 2002 he was also the professional French champion, in 2003 he won the title of European champion. In December 2005, he missed the chance of a WBA world title, he lost to defending champion Lorenzo Parra from Venezuela on points. In March 2007 he was also defeated in a WBO title fight against title holder Omar Narvaes.
On December 8th, he finally managed to win a world title in his third attempt. He defeated the Argentine boxer Juan Carlos Reveco after a unanimous decision on points and won the WBA world title in light flyweight.
On September 6, 2009, Asloum announced his retirement from boxing. The reason he cited disputes with the television channel Canal Plus .
Others
In the film Der Boxer von Auschwitz he embodies the former Tunisian-Jewish flyweight world champion from 1931/32, Victor Perez . His younger brother Rédouane Asloum (* 1981) also took part in the Olympic Games as a boxer.
