Andry Laffita Fernández (born March 26, 1978 in Pinar del Río ) is a Cuban boxer . Laffita was silver medalist at the 2005 World Championships and the 2008 Olympic Games in flyweight (up to 51 kg).

Career

Andry Laffita began boxing as a teenager and, after some initial successes, was delegated to the Cuban Boxer Training Center in Pinar del Río . In 1996, at the age of 18, he took part in the Cuban flyweight championships for the first time and was only defeated there in the semifinals against Hector Barrientos. He completed his first important assignment in an international championship that same year. He represented Cuba at the Junior World Championships in his native Havana . There he defeated all opponents who stood in his way and became Junior World Champion with a point win over Kamil Jamatutinow from Russia .

1997 Andry Laffita finished at the international tournament of the Cuban boxing association Giraldo Córdova Cardín in Pinar del Río in the light flyweight after a final defeat against Maikro Romero from Cuba the 2nd place.

At the Cuban Championship in 1999 he was defeated in the semi-finals of the light flyweight against Yan Barthelemí on points, against whom he was also defeated in the semi-finals of the Giraldo Córdova Cardin tournament in 1999 in Santa Clara . In the following years he failed again and again at the important boxing events in Cuba to Yan Barthelemi, to whom he lost a total of eleven times, or to Yuriolkis Gamboa . In addition, Andry Laffita was banned for a doping offense between 1999 and 2001.

In 2003 Andry Laffita competed in three international matches in Germany . He lost it in Frankfurt (Main) in the bantamweight against Alexander Propp on points and was defeated in Schriesheim in the flyweight against Rustam Rachimow . In Speyer he won the flyweight against Vitaly Kiseljew on points.

For his next assignment at an international championship he came back in 2005. Yuriolkis Gamboa no longer brought the limit for the flyweight from this year and Andry Laffita, who had started in the light flyweight until 2004, moved to the flyweight in place of Gamboa. At the 2005 World Cup in Mianyang / China he made a convincing debut, because in his first fight he defeated the 2003 world champion Somjit Jongjohor from Thailand on points (16:14). Then he also won against the 2001 world champion Jerome Thomas from France on points (25:15), defeated Violino Payla from the Philippines by breaking off in the 3rd round and defeated Juan Carlos Payano from the Dom. Rep. (31:22) and Mirat Sarsenbajew from Kazakhstan (21:16) on points. So he was in the final against the South Korean Lee Ok-sung , to whom he was defeated on points (22:33). He was runner-up in the 2005 flyweight division.

In 2006 and 2007, Andry Laffita was defeated at the Cuban flyweight championship against Yoandris Salinas on points and lost in the same year at the Giraldo Córdova Cardín tournament in Santa Clara against Yampier Hernández on points. It was therefore not used at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro . At the championship of the Cuban performance centers he won over Aurelio Fuentes, Yorman Rodriguez, Yasmany Abel and Alexei Collada on points and only lost to Noelkis Cabreara.

In 2008 Andry Laffita was the first Cuban flyweight champion with a points win over Alexei Collada (12: 3). He then took second place in the American Olympic qualification in Port of Spain / Trinidad after victories over William Urina from Colombia and Eddy Valenzela from Guiana and a defeat against Juan Carlos Payano, thus securing the ticket to Beijing.

In 2008 he started at several major international tournaments. He won the final battle of the IV Cuban Olympics in Havana over Juan Carlos Payana on points. He also won the Klitschko Brothers Tournament in Kiev in the final over Artem Dalakjan from Ukraine on points and was defeated in the final of the Grand Prix tournament in Ústí nad Labem / Czech Republic against Mischa Alojan from Russia on points. a. defeated the German Ronny Beblik on points. In Cuenca (Ecuador) he was then Pan American flyweight champion by winning points in the final over Juliano Neto from Brazil. At his last start before the Olympic Games in Beijing, he beat Jérôme Thomas on points in an international match between Cuba and France in Havana in June 2008 .

At the Olympic Games in Beijing, Andry Laffita managed to win the medal she had longed for. In the flyweight division he defeated the talented Englishman Khalid Saeed Yafai on points (9: 3), then he outperformed the co-favorites McWilliams Arroyo from Puerto Rico and also won in the semifinals against the three-time European champion Georgi Balakschin on points (9: 8 but he bowed to a better one, the Thai Somjit Jongjohor with 2: 8 hits.

After a one-year hiatus, Laffita started a comeback in 2010, but could no longer assert himself at the national level, so he ended his career.
