McWilliams Arroyo Acevedo (* 5. December 1985 in Ceiba , Puerto Rico ) is a Puerto Rican professional boxer in the super flyweight . As an amateur, he became world flyweight champion in 2009.

He is the twin brother of boxer McJoe Arroyo .

Amateur career

McWilliams Arroyo was an outstanding amateur. He won the silver medal at the Pan American Cadet Championships in Mexico in 2001 and the silver medal in the light flyweight division at the Pan American Championships in Brazil in 2005 , when he only lost to the world and Olympic champion Yan Barthelemí in the final . However, he defeated this at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Colombia in 2006 and won the gold medal in the light flyweight division.

In 2007 he won the Pan American Games in Brazil in the flyweight division , beating later professional world champion Juan Payano in the final. At the 2007 World Championships in Chicago , he reached the quarter-finals and qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , where he was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Andry Laffita .

In 2009 he started in the flyweight division at the World Championships in Milan , where he defeated Norbert Kalucza , Yampier Hernández , Ronny Beblik and Njambajaryn Tögstsogt and won the gold medal.

Professional career

He made his professional debut on February 27, 2010. In June 2010, he surprisingly lost on points against the Japanese Takashi Okada, but won the WBO Latin America flyweight title in March 2012 against Luis Maldonado . He defended this against Ronald Ramos in September 2012. In February 2013 he defeated Jose Tamayo in the fight for the interim Latin American championship of the WBC in flyweight and defeated the undefeated Froilan Saludar in June 2014.

On September 10, 2014, he boxed for the IBF flyweight world title, but narrowly lost by split point decision against Amnat Ruenroeng . He fought another world championship fight on April 23, 2016 for the WBC flyweight title, but lost unanimously on points to Roman Gonzalez .

In February 2018 he won by majority decision on points against Carlos Cuadras and thereby became WBC Silver title holder in the super flyweight division. In September 2018 he lost to Kazuto Ioka unanimously .

In February 2019, he defeated Carlos Maldonado in the fight for the WBO Latin American flyweight title and won a title defense against Carlos Buitrago in June 2019.
