Amnat Ruenroeng ( Thai : อำนาจ รื่นเริง , sometimes Amnat Ruanroeng ; born December 18, 1979 in Si Racha ) is a Thai professional boxer and former IBF flyweight world champion .

Amateur career

Amnat Ruenroeng describes himself as a former "street fighter" who began practicing the martial arts Muay Thai at the age of twelve . He was sentenced to several years in prison for several offenses, including robbery of a tourist. In prison he took part in a boxing program aimed at rehabilitation and in 2007 was accepted into the B-squad of the Thai national team in boxing because of his talent.

In 2007 he took part in one of the most renowned international boxing tournaments in Asia, the Kings Cup in Bangkok , which has been held annually since 1975 . There he replaced the A boxer Suban Punnon, who had lost due to an injury, and surprisingly reached the final, where he was able to defeat the reigning world champion Zhou Shiming in the semifinals . It was not until the fight for the gold medal that he lost to Scheralij Dostiev , who lost to Shiming in the semifinals of the last World Cup and won bronze at 12:14 .

Ruenroeng then became an integral part of the senior squad and started a few weeks later at the 2007 Asian Championships in Ulaanbaatar , but this time lost to Shiming in the preliminary round. At the 2007 World Championships in Chicago , however, he reached the semi-finals with victories against Veaceslav Gojan and Howhannes Danieljan , where he was eliminated in the fight for the final against Harry Tañamor and won bronze. In December 2007 he also won the gold medal at the Southeast Asian Games in Korat .

In 2008 he finally won the Kings Cup , defeating Kazuto Ioka and Kaew Pongprayoon , among others . The following month he also won the silver medal at the French International Tournament in Saint-Quentin , when he was defeated in the final by just under 12:15 against Nordine Oubaali . Due to his success, he was also able to take part in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and won in the preliminary round against Jack Willie, as well as in the round of 16 against Winston Méndez , before he was eliminated in the quarter-finals against the later silver medalist Pürewdordschiin Serdamba with 2: 5.

In April 2009 he won the Kings Cup again and started in June 2009 at the Asian Championships in Zhuhai , where he lost 4-2 to Suranjoy Singh in the semifinals and won bronze. In the quarterfinals he had defeated Azat Usenaliyev. In September 2009 he reached the quarter-finals at the World Championships in Milan through victories against Artem Dalakjan , Juan Payano and Shahriyor Isakov, where he was eliminated in the fight for a place in the medal ranks 5-7 against Mikhail Alojan . In December 2009 he won the gold medal again at the Southeast Asian Games in Vientiane .

In 2010 he won the Kings Cup for the third time in a row and started at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou , where he again lost to Zou Shiming in the semifinals and won a bronze medal. He won another bronze medal at the Russian Konstantin Korotkov Tournament in Khabarovsk in 2011 , after losing to Pak Jong-chol in the semifinals .

Professional career

Amnat Ruenroeng made his professional debut on May 18, 2012 in Thailand. He won eleven fights in a row, including the titles IBF Asia and IBF Pan Pacific , before winning the vacant IBF flyweight world title on January 22, 2014. He defeated it Rocky Fuentes unanimously on points. He then defended the title just on points against Kazuto Ioka and McWilliams Arroyo , and unanimously on points against Zhou Shiming , John Casimero and Myung Lee. In the rematch against Casimero on May 25, 2016, Ruenroeng lost by knockout in the fourth round.

After the announcement that professional boxers would be allowed to participate for the first time at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , Ruenroeng started at the qualifying tournament in Vargas in July 2016 . In the lightweight he was able to fight for a starting place with victories against Artur Bril and Carmine Tommasone . At the Olympic Games in August 2016, he won the preliminary round against Ignacio Perrin, but was eliminated in the round of 16 against Sofiane Oumiha .

Back at the pros, he had three wins and two losses by April 2019. His next fight was not planned for a year later, in May 2020 against Srisaket Rungvisai . However, this has been postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
