Juan Carlos Payano Pichardo (* 12. April 1984 in La Vega , Dominican Republic ) is a Dominican professional boxer and former world champion of the associations WBA and IBO in bantamweight .

As an amateur, he was an Olympian in 2004 and 2008.

Amateur career

Juan Payano won the silver flyweight medal at the 2003 Pan American Games when he was only defeated in the final against Yuriorkis Gamboa . He then started at the 2004 Olympic Games , where he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Jérôme Thomas .

At the Pan American Championships in 2005 he won the flyweight gold medal, defeating McJoe Arroyo , among others . He qualified for the 2005 World Championships and reached there, among other things with a win against Samir Məmmədov, the quarter-finals, where he lost in the fight for a place in the medal ranks against Andry Laffita . He won another flyweight gold medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games in 2006, where he was again able to defeat McJoe Arroyo.

At the Pan American Games in 2007 he was only defeated in the final against McWilliams Arroyo and won the silver medal in the flyweight division. In the American Olympic qualification in 2008 he emerged as the winner and had defeated Andry Laffita in the final fight . He then took part in the 2008 Olympic Games , where he was able to defeat Jérôme Thomas this time, but lost to Vincenzo Picardi in the second round .

In 2009 he won a bronze bantamweight medal at the Pan American Championships, but was eliminated from the 2009 World Championships in the second preliminary round against Amnat Ruenroeng .

As an amateur, he won 421 of 446 fights.

Professional career

Juan Payano switched to professional life in 2010 and signed with US promoter Henry Rivalta. His manager and trainer was Herman Caicedo, his training facility was the Dream Team Gym in Miami . He made his professional debut on August 21, 2010. In March 2012 he won the WBC Latino title, the WBA Fedelatin title in May 2012 and the NABA North American title in July 2012 .

On September 26, 2014, he won the WBA world bantamweight title through a technical decision against Anselmo Moreno . Due to an unintentional headbutt by Moreno in round 2, Payano was unable to continue fighting from the sixth round due to injury. Then it came to the evaluation of the point slips on which Payano was ahead. In August 2015, he defended the title with a narrow points win against Rau'Shee Warren and thus also became IBO World Champion. On June 18, 2016, however, he lost both titles in the rematch to Rau'Shee Warren after the latter was declared the winner by a majority decision on points.

In March 2018, he defeated Mike Plania in the fight for the WBO Intercontinental title . In October 2018 he boxed against Naoya Inoue for the WBA world bantamweight title, but lost by knockout in the first round. He suffered another knockout loss in July 2019 against Luis Nery .
