Nery completed a total of only nine amateur fights, all of which he was able to win, five of them by knockout.

Nery made his professional debut on May 5, 2012 against compatriot Jose Guadalupe Salgado, who also made his debut, and won this fight by TKo in Round 1.

In April 2016 he won the vacant American continental title of the WBC when he defeated Martin Casillas clearly on points in a fight scheduled for 10 rounds. At the end of July of the same year he defended this belt against David Sanchez with an early victory. On December 17, 2016, he captured the WBC silver title, which was also vacant, with a knockout victory against Raymond Tabugon.

On August 15 of the following year, Nery competed against the Japanese WBC world champion Shinsuke Yamanaka for his title. The Japanese had held that title since 2011 and defended it eleven times and was an absolute top favorite. Completely surprisingly, however, Nery beat Yamanaka knocked out in the 4th round and was crowned WBC world champion.
