Naoya Inoue ( Japanese 井上 尚 弥 , Inoue Naoya; born April 10, 1993 in Zama , Kanagawa , Japan ) is a Japanese professional boxer and former WBC world champion in light flyweight and WBO world champion in super flyweight , as well as current WBA and IBF world champion in Bantamweight . In 2018/19 he won the World Boxing Super Series tournament .
He is the brother of boxer Takuma Inoue.
Amateur career
Naoya Inoue won 75 of 81 fights in his amateur career, 48 of them prematurely. He was a bronze medalist in the light flyweight division at the 2010 Asian Youth Championships in Tehran and the round of 16 at the 2010 Youth World Championships in Baku . In 2011 he became the Japanese light flyweight champion and started at the 2011 World Championships in Baku. There he came, among other things with a win against Howhannes Danieljan in the round of 16, where he was eliminated against Yosvany Veitía with 12:15.
In 2012 he took part in the Asian Olympic qualification in Astana , where he was defeated in the final against Birschan Schaqypow and thus could not qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games .
Professional career
He made his professional debut on October 2, 2012. He is coached by his father Shingo Inoue and his manager is Hideyuki Ōhashi from Ohashi Promotions .
On April 6, 2014 he won the WBC world title in light flyweight by TKO in the sixth round against the Mexican Adrián Hernández (balance: 29-2). It was only Inoue's sixth professional fight and thus the earliest win of this world title in WBC history. In September 2014 he defended the title through TKO in the eleventh round against the Thai Wittawas Basapean (17-4).
On December 30, 2014 he boxed the super flyweight against the WBO world champion Omar Narváez (43-1) and won in the second round by knockout. He then put down the WBC title in November 2015 to stay in this weight class. He still defended his WBO title against Warlito Parrenas (24-6), David Carmona (20-2), Karoon Jarupianlerd (35-7), Kōhei Kōno (32-9), Ricardo Rodríguez (16-3), Antonio Nieves (17-1) and Yoan Boyeaux (41-4).
After these seven title defenses, he resigned the WBO title in March 2018 and switched to bantamweight. In this weight class, he won the WBA world title in his first fight on May 25, 2018, when he defeated Briton Jamie McDonnell (29-2) by TKO in the first round. With this victory Inoue also qualified for participation in the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) tournament . He won his first title defense in October 2018 by knocking out Juan Payano (20-1) in the first round and this victory also made it into the semi-finals of the WBSS. There he defeated Emmanuel Rodríguez (19-0) by knockout in the second round in May 2019 and thus qualified for the WBSS final, which he won unanimously against IBF World Champion Nonito Donaire (40-5) on November 7, 2019 . He combined his WBA title with the IBF title of his opponent and was awarded the Muhammad Ali Trophy as the winner of the World Boxing Super Series .
