Kōhei Kōno ( Japanese 河野 公平 , Kōno Kōhei ; born November 23, 1980 in the district of Nakakoma (today: Minami-Alps ), Yamanashi Prefecture , Japan ) is a Japanese professional boxer and two-time world champion (also current world champion) of the WBA in super flyweight .
Professional career
Kono lost his debut fight against compatriot Toshiaki Nitta on points. In 2007 he became both Japanese and OPBF Master.
In 2008 he boxed against Nobuo Nashiro for the WBA world champion belt and failed. The following year he defeated the Philippines Daniel Ferreras and was OPBF champion for the second time. He defended this title against Marvin Tampus by unanimous decision over 12 rounds and against Masafumi Tonomura by technical knockout in round 11.
On September 20, 2010, Kono boxed again for the world championship, this time for the title of the WBC association . He lost this fight just on points. He also lost his next two fights on points. In his third attempt to win a world title, it finally worked out when he took the WBA title from Tepparith Kokietgym in a 12-round battle at the end of December 2012 .
However, he had to give up the belt to Liborio Solís in his first defense of the title . On March 26, 2014 Kono captured the meanwhile vacant WBA world title against the Thai Denkaosan Kaovichit by classic knockout in round 8. In the same year he defended this belt with a draw against Norberto Jimenez.
