Kaew Pongprayoon

Kaew Pongprayoon ( Thai แก้ว พง ษ์ ประยูร , RTGS Kaeo Phongprayun ; born March 28, 1980 in Kamphaeng Phet Province ) is a Thai amateur boxer . He is Asian champion in 2009 and silver medalist at the 2012 Olympic Games in London in the light flyweight .

Career

Kaew first attracted attention at the Southeast Asian Championships in 2001 in Kuala Lumpur , where he won the silver medal in paper weight (up to 45 kg). In 2003 he won the gold medal at the same championships in Hanoi , in 2005 in Bacolod City the bronze medal and in 2007 in Korat the gold medal in paper weight. After Kaew won the King's Cup in Bangkok in 2009, he was nominated for the Asian Championships in Zhuhai . After winning against Li Jiazhao, China (5: 4), Ri Chung Il, North Korea (4: 1) and Nanao Singh, India (9: 8), he won the gold medal in the light flyweight division. At the World Championships in Milan in the same year he started as the reigning Asian champion, but after victories against Adlet Kapezov, Kazakhstan (14: 4) and Nanao Singh, India (16: 4) , he had to face the Spaniard Kelvin de la in the round of 16 Never give up (3: 9). At the end of the year he finally won the Southeast Asian Light Flyweight Championships in Vientiane .

In 2010 Kaew won the King's Cup in Bangkok and took second place at the Popenchenko Memorial in Moscow and in 2011 he came second at the Konstantin Korotkow Memorial in Khabarovsk . With this success behind him, he took part in the World Championships in Baku in the same year and reached the quarter-finals after victories against Hamza Touba , Germany (14: 8) and Salman Alisade , Azerbaijan (23: 8). In this he lost to the Olympic champion from 2008 and world champion from 2005 and 2007 (after this championship also from 2011) Zhou Shiming , China (8:14), but was able to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in London . In 2011 he also won the Southeast Asian Championships again, this time in Palembang . At the Olympic test competitions in London in the same year he was third after a semi-final defeat against Birschan Schaqypow , Kazakhstan (8:15).

At the 2012 Olympic Games, Kaew reached after victories over Mohamed Flissi , Algeria (19:11), Carlos Quipo , Ecuador (16:10), Alexandar Alexandrow , Bulgaria (16:10), and in the semifinals just over David Hajrapetjan , Russia ( 13:12), the final, which he lost to defending champion Zhou Shiming , China (13:10), and thus won the silver medal.

Others

Kaew Pongprayoon is 1.60 m tall. He belongs to the Thai army . In recognition of his Olympic success, he was promoted from sergeant to lieutenant. After the Olympics in London, he announced the end of his boxing career and announced that he would train younger boxers.
