Career

Dawid Airapetjan started boxing in 1997 as a teenager. Although he is of Armenian descent, he always started for Russia . He is a member of Dinamo Magnitogorsk and is or was trained there by Valery Entaltsev and Eduard Dschagrajew . In the Russian national team he is or was supervised by Alexander Lebsjak , Nikolai Chromow and Alexander Tschernoiwanow . By the start of the 2009 World Cup, he had contested 297 fights, of which he won 270. This high number of fights is extraordinary for a boxer in the lightest weight class (up to 48 kg body weight), because in many championships or tournaments in this weight class there were often few or no competitors at all.

Dawid Airapetjan celebrated his first major success in 2001 when he finished 2nd in paper weight at the Russian Junior Championship behind Alexei Taratorkin . He was then used in 2002 at the Junior World Championships in Santiago de Cuba , where he became Junior World Champion with four victories . On the way to this title he defeated u. a. the strong Italian Vincenzo Picardi (33:12) and in the final battle the Cuban Jose Luis Mustelier (22:18) on points.

In 2003 he finished 2nd in the paper weight category behind Sergei Kazakow at the Russian Seniors Championship . In the years 2004 to 2007 he won the Russian championship title in this weight class four times in a row. At international championships he was preferred by the Russian Boxing Federation in 2004 and 2005 to Kazakov. Only when he had beaten Kazakov on points in the Russian championship in 2006 (26:14), he was also used in international championships.

This began when Dawid Airapetjan started at the 2006 European Championships in Plovdiv . He also won the European championship there with victories over the Ukrainian Heorhij Tschyhajew , the Hungarian Pál Bedák , the Armenian Howhannes Danieljan and the Italian Alfonso Pinto .

In 2007 he took part in the World Championships in Chicago . He won there over the Mongols Pürewdordschiin Serdamba (34: 7) and Pál Bedák (27:18) on points, but then met defending champion Zhou Shiming from China in the round of 16 , against whom he clearly lost on points (6:23) and so it only came in 9th place.

In 2008 Dawid Airapetjan qualified with a victory at the qualifying tournament in Pescara for participation in the Olympic Games in Beijing . In the final battle of this tournament, he defeated Poland Łukasz Maszczyk clearly on points (24: 3). In Beijing, however, he disappointed, because he lost his first fight against Heorhij Tschyhajew, against whom he had clearly won on points (11:13) at the 2006 European Championships, which meant he was eliminated before reaching the round of 16 and only 17th . Place occupied.

In the first half of 2009, Dawid Airapetjan was able to convince the Russian officials and coaches again with tournament victories in Plovdiv and Novosibirsk . In addition, he made an excellent impression at the World Championship elimination of the Russian Boxing Association in Chekhov with victories over Alexander Samoilow (11: 5), Viktor Vereschtschagin (24: 0) and Belik Galanow (13: 3) and this tournament won confidently. He was then used again at the world championship, which took place in Milan , in the light flyweight division. In Milan he won over the Colombian Ceiber Ávila (25: 6), the Turkish Ferhat Pehlivan (7: 2), the Ecuadorian Carlos Quipo (14: 5), the Spaniard Kelvin de la Nieve (12: 3) and the South Korean Shin Jong-hun (9: 1) each safe on points. In the final battle he faced Pürewdordschiin Serdamba, whom he had defeated at the 2007 World Cup. In Milan, however, Serdamba was the stronger, who secured the world title with a 10: 5 point win. Dawid Airapetjan won the World Cup silver medal.

At the European Championships in the following year, Dawid Airapetjan was eliminated in the quarterfinals against the Azerbaijani Elvin Məmişzadə (5: 3).

Things went better again at the 2011 World Championships when he reached the semi-finals after victories over the Americans Eros Correa (23:10), Łukasz Maszczyk (24: 7), and Kelvin de la Nieve (15: 8) however against the reigning Olympic champion and later world champion Zhou Shiming (15: 8) lost and thus only won bronze.

With this placement he also qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games , in which he reached the semifinals after victories over the Puerto Rican Jantony Ortiz (15:13) and Ferhat Pehlivan (19:11), which he, however, narrowly beat the eventual silver medalist Kaew Pongprayoon from Thailand (13:12) lost and won the Olympic bronze medal.

At the European Championships 2013 in Minsk Dawid Airapetjan won the gold medal with a final victory over the Irishman Paddy Barnes .
