Patrick "Paddy" Gerard Barnes , MBE (* 9. April 1987 in Belfast , Northern Ireland ) is a former Irish professional boxer in the flyweight . As an amateur, he represented Ireland in the light flyweight division at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and the 2012 Olympic Games in London , where he won a bronze medal each .

Amateur career

National successes

Barnes started boxing at the age of eleven and fought for the Holy Family ABC boxing club in Belfast. In 2005 he became Irish Junior Champion and also won a bronze medal in the national adult championships that same year. In 2006 he was runner-up.

In 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014 he was Irish light flyweight champion.

Commonwealth

At the Commonwealth Championships in Scotland in 2005 , he secured a bronze medal after a narrow semi-final defeat against Mo Nasir. In 2007 in England he won the gold medal with a final victory against Nanao Singh.

He first started at the Commonwealth Games in 2006 in Australia and was eliminated in the quarterfinals. In 2010 in India and in 2014 in Scotland he won the gold medal by winning the final against Jafet Uutoni and Devendro Singh .

Europe

In 2010 in Russia he started at the European Championships for the first time and won the gold medal by winning against István Lakatos, Tommy Stubbs , Kelvin de la Nieve and Elvin Məmişzadə .

2013 in Belarus he came against Ashley Williams, István Ungvári and Salman Əlizadə again in the final, but where he was not allowed to compete due to a nose injury suffered in the fight against Əlizadə. As a result, Dawid Airapetjan became European champion without a fight.

In addition, Barnes won the silver medal at the EU Championships in Poland after losing to Pál Bedák in the final .

World Championships and Olympic Games

At the 2007 World Championships in Chicago , he was eliminated after three wins in the quarterfinals against Zhou Shiming . He was qualified for the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 , where he entered the round of 16 with a bye and defeated José Meza there . In the quarterfinals he beat Łukasz Maszczyk and moved into the semifinals, where he was again defeated by Zhou Shiming. He therefore got out of the games with a bronze medal. At the 2009 World Cup in Milan and the 2011 World Cup in Baku , he was eliminated in the first fight against Peter Mungai and Mark Barriga .

In 2012 he reached third place in the European Olympic qualification in Turkey when he reached the semi-finals against István Ungvári and Ştefan Caslarov and lost to Ferhat Pehlivan . He was qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in London , where he again received a bye for the preliminary round. With victories against Thomas Essomba and Devendro Singh he again reached the semi-finals and thus the medal ranks, where he was eliminated again against Zhou Shiming, albeit with a 15: 15+, and won bronze.

At the 2013 World Cup in Almaty , he was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Jasurbek Latipov . With seven wins in the World Series of Boxing , including the last against Yoel Finol , he qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . There he lost his first fight against Samuel Carmona .

World Series of Boxing

In the 2013/14 season Barnes started for Italia Thunder in the World Series of Boxing for the first time . But he only played one fight, which he lost against Mohamed Flissi of the Algeria Desert Hawks with 1: 2 judge votes. In the following season Barnes was used continuously and was able to win all seven fights. He led the flyweight rankings at the end of the season, which qualified him for the 2016 Olympic Games .

Professional career

After the 2016 Olympic Games, Barnes switched to professional life and is being promoted by Frank Warren . Its manager is Matthew Macklin . He made his professional debut on November 5, 2016 in Belfast. In his only third fight on June 17, 2017, he won the WBO European flyweight championship against Silvio Olteanu. In his fifth fight, he also secured the intercontinental WBO championship against Eliecer Quezada.

On August 18, 2018, he lost in the fight for the WBC world flyweight championship against Cristofer Rosales . In March 2019, he surprisingly lost on points against Oscar Mojica. After three losses in the previous four fights, Barnes announced his retirement from boxing in November 2019.
