Thomas Essomba

Thomas Essomba (born December 2, 1987 in Ebolowa ) is a Cameroonian amateur boxer . He was two-time African champion and participant in the 2008 Olympic Games . He fights in light flyweight .

Career

His first international competition was the Military World Championships ( CISM ) 2005 in Pretoria , where he was eliminated in the quarterfinals. He achieved the same result in the same year at the African Championships in Casablanca . At the Commonwealth Games in 2006 in the following year, he was eliminated in the first fight against the Pakistani Muhammad Nisar .

At the All Africa Games 2007 he only lost in the semifinals against the two-time African champion Suleiman Bilali . He did not take part in the 2007 World Boxing Championships .

At the first African Olympic qualification tournament in 2008 in Algiers , he won the first fight against the South African Lebogang Pilane , but lost in the second against Manyo Plange . He got a second chance at the second African Olympic qualification tournament in Windhoek and was able to make impressive use of it. With his final victory against the Moroccan Redouane Bouchtouk , he secured a qualification place at the 2008 Olympic Games in the light flyweight division. In the same year he also took part in the first ever Presidents Cup of the AIBA and lost here in the final against Harry Tañamor from the Philippines . At the 2nd Africa Cup of Nations in 2008 he was able to prevail in the final against the Namibian Jafet Uutoni just on points and thereby won this pre-Olympic tournament.

When he first participated in the Olympic Games , Essomba was eliminated in the first fight against the Armenian Howhannes Danieljan with a defeat on points (9: 3).

In 2009 Essomba became African champions for the first time, but had to admit defeat to the Bulgarian Alexandar Alexandrow in the first fight at the World Championships in Milan .

In 2011 Essomba was able to repeat its success at the African Championships from 2009. He also won the All Africa Games in the same year. At the 2011 World Championships he was again unsuccessful and was eliminated in the second fight against the Mongols Pürewdordschiin Serdamba . The so missed direct Olympic qualification he reached through the African Olympic qualification tournament 2012 in Casablanca with reaching the semi-finals. At the 2012 Olympics, he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Paddy Barnes .
