Heorhij Tschyhajew
Heorhij Tschyhajew ( Ukrainian Георгій Чигаєв , Russian transliteration: Georgi Tschigajew ; born October 19, 1983 in Odessa , Soviet Union ) is a Ukrainian boxer . He was the European flyweight champion in 2008 .
Career
Georgi Tschigajew comes from the Lviv region . He started boxing as a teenager. He is trained by IG Kozak and national coach Dimitro Sosnowsky.
In 2000 he took part in the Junior World Championships in Budapest , where he took third place in paper weight (class up to 48 kg body weight (KG)) after a defeat against Cuban Yankiel León and won a bronze medal at the World Championships .
In 2002 Georgi Chigajew became Ukrainian paper weight champion. He then represented his country in 2003 in paper weight at the World Championships in Bangkok . But he still had to learn the hard way there, because he lost his first fight in the round of the last "32" against Shandos Dschumabekow from Kazakhstan and ended up in 17th place with all losers of this round.
Although he was the Ukrainian flyweight champion in 2004, he was not nominated for the Olympic qualifying tournaments by the Ukrainian Boxing Federation. But in 2005 he was back at the world championship, which took place in Mianyang / China . However, it happened to him in the flyweight as in the world championship in 2003, because he lost his first fight in the round of 32 against the American Rau'Shee Warren by breaking off in the 2nd round and ended up only on the 17th place.
In 2006 Georgi Tschigajew took part in the European championship in Plovdiv in paper weight. He lost there in the round of 16 against David Hajrapetjan from Russia and came in 9th place. He did much better at the 2007 World Cup in Chicago . In paper weight he won there over Jeyhan Abijew from Azerbaijan and Łukasz Maszczyk from Poland on points and was only defeated in the quarterfinals against Nordine Oubaali from France . He reached fifth place, which brought him qualification for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing .
At the Olympic Games in Beijing he defeated David Hajrapetjan in paper weight on points (13:11), but was defeated in the round of 16 against Yampier Hernández from Cuba . He was eliminated and finished in ninth place. After the Olympic Games, he also started at the European Championships in Liverpool in 2008 . However, he no longer trained in the paper weight, but started in the flyweight. A measure that paid off, because he won in Liverpool against Derenik Gishlarjan from Armenia , Francisco Torrijos from Spain , Veli Moomin from Macedonia and in the final battle against Salomo N'tuve from Sweden and thus became European champion .
