Ceiba is a city in the northeast of the US suburb of Puerto Rico . It is located south of Fajardo , east of Río Grande and north of Naguabo . The city is divided into eight boroughs, in which about 14,000 people live.

history

Ceiba was founded on April 7, 1838 by Luis de la Cruz. The city got its name from the kapok tree ( Ceiba pentandra ), which grows on the island and especially in the urban area of ​​Ceiba.

In Ceiba there is the Ceiba Forest , which stretches along the east coast of the island to Fajardo. 95% of the forest is classified as mangrove . The forest is home to various species of birds, turtles, and manatees. It is crossed by the Daguao River , the Demajagua River and the Fajardo River , among others .

politics

The current mayor of the city is Angelo Cruz Ramos, who was elected in 2012. He belongs to the nationwide important party Partido Nuevo Progresista . The city is part of Senatorial District VIII, which is represented by two senators in national affairs.

The design and colors of the city flag are taken from the city arms. The flag is divided into two halves, the right half is colored green, the left half is red. In the middle of the red-colored field there is a golden four-leaf clover .

The city coat of arms contains a shield in the middle in Spanish form with a rounded base. In the upper third of the shield there is a golden trefoil cross in the middle and two outer golden flowers, all on a red background. In the lower two thirds is the kapok tree, which gave the city its name, on a golden background. The crest consists of a golden crown, which is formed by three castle towers with connecting walls.
