history
The city was founded on July 16, 1840 by Desiderio Escobar and Quilimaco Escobar and approved by Governor Miguel López. It was named after the Río Grande, a Puerto Rican river, and was built where the Río Grande meets the Río Espírito Santo.
City structure
Río Grande is divided into nine districts of different sizes:
- Ciénaga Baja (18,220)
- Zarzal (13,385)
- Guzmán Abajo (6614)
- Ciénaga Alta (4606)
- Mameyes II (2919)
- Jiménez (2903)

economy
Agriculture
Agriculture in Río Grande is at a mediocre level. Primarily fruits, ornamental plants and vegetables are grown, and cattle are also raised.
Industry and commerce
In Río Grande there are smaller, mostly independent textile factories. There are also numerous local shops. The city does not have a shopping center, as the Canóvanas' shopping district is in the immediate vicinity. Nevertheless, there are two medium-sized shopping streets on 65th and 956th, which however still have a lot of vacancies, as this type of shopping bundling is still relatively new in the city. Together with Casónavas, Río Grande is developing into the economic center in the northeast of the island, which is also confirmed by modern hotel facilities and Route 66.
tourism
As in the rest of Puerto Rico, the city's biggest economic driver is tourism. Río Grande is home to one of the largest secluded areas with beach access ( Coco Beach ) on the entire island. The city is a few kilometers from the El Yunque National Forest , the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System .
