Luquillo is a city in the northeast of the US suburb of Puerto Rico . It is west of Fajardo and east of Río Grande . The city is divided into six districts and in 2010 had about 20,000 inhabitants.

history

Luquillo was founded in 1797 and was named after the Indian cacique Loquillo, who died a few years after the last Indian rebellion in 1513. In the course of its history, it has received various nicknames, mainly because of its location, which continue to this day: La Capital del Sol (The Sun Capital ), La Riviera de Puerto Rico (The Puerto Rico Coast) and Los Come Cocos (The Coconut Eaters ).

politics

In 2012, Jesús Márquez Rodríguez was elected mayor and has managed the city ever since. Luquillo is part of Senate District VIII and is represented at the national level by two senators, Pedro A. Rodríguez and Luis Daniel Rivera.

flag

The city's flag consists of three horizontal stripes; a thin yellow stripe in the middle and a blue and a green stripe with double width above and below. The blue color stands for the sky and the sea, the yellow color for the beaches and the green color for the species-rich vegetation in the mountain landscapes. The city coat of arms is housed in the center of the flag.

The city coat of arms shows three green, interconnected mountains in the middle and a bay below with alternating blue and silver waves; both symbols are placed on a gold background. The upper third of the coat of arms shows three green branches of the iris on a blue background , which, contrary to its natural color, is shown in white. The crown of the coat of arms shows three golden castle towers. With the exception of these towers, the coat of arms is surrounded on both sides by a green palm branch that crosses at the lower end with the palm branch on the other side.

City structure

The city is now divided into six boroughs:

  • Juan Martín
  • Luquillo Pueblo (city center)
  • Mameyes I
  • Mata de Plátano
  • Pitahaya
  • Sabana
