Henryk Średnicki
Henryk Średnicki (born January 17, 1955 in Siemianowice Śląskie , † April 10, 2016 in Piotrków Trybunalski ) was a Polish boxer . He was world champion in 1978 and European champion in 1977 and 1979 in amateur boxing in the light and flyweight classes.
Career
Henryk Średnicki started boxing at Gornik Siemianowice as a teenager . At a height of 1.60 meters, he was extremely light and began his career as a light flyweight (class up to 48 kg body weight). Over the years he then grew into the fly and bantam weight (classes up to 51 kg and 54 kg body weight). During his career, which was to last until 1985, he also started for the following clubs: GKS Kattowitz , GKS Tychy , GKS Jaskrzebie u. Gornik Sosnowiec . In 1973 he became Polish junior light flyweight champion with a win over Henryk Urbanski. This was his first major success that many more would follow.
In 1974 he was the first Polish champion in the senior light flyweight division with a win over Janusz Misiak. He was then able to take part in the first world championships, which were held in Havana in 1974 . But he was unlucky in Havana, because he lost his round of 16 against Remus Cosma from Romania because he had to be removed from the ring due to an injury.
In 1975 Henryk Średnicki won the TSC tournament in Berlin (East) in his weight class with a point victory over Klaus Gertenbach , GDR . He was also again Polish light flyweight champion with his point victory over Jerzy Dominik. At the European Championships in 1975 in Katowice he defeated the light flyweight Brendan Dunne from Ireland by breaking off in the 1st round, but lost in the quarterfinals against the 1972 Olympic champion György Gedó , Hungary , on points and finished in 5th place. In 1975 he was also a member of the Polish national team, which fought four international matches against the USA in the United States . He won it over his opponents Luis Curtis , Claudell Adkins, Mike Jones and JD Seals each on points. In an international match against the GDR, he lost in Karl-Marx-Stadt against Dietmar Geilich on points.
In the 1976 Olympic year, Henryk Średnicki again won the Polish light flyweight championship with a point win over Henryk Pielesiak. At a tournament in Łódź he had to admit defeat in the flyweight division to his compatriot Ryszard Czerwinski on points. At the Olympic Games in Montreal he won against Luis Curtis with a 5-0 judge's vote on points, but lost to the North Korean Li Byong-uk in the round of 16 with a controversial 2-3 judge's votes and had to retire. He and the other losers in the round of 16 remained in 9th place.
In 1977 Henryk Średnicki switched to flyweight and lost at the Polish championships in this weight class against Ryszard Czerwinski on points. For the European Championships in 1977 in Halle (Saale) , he trained again in the light flyweight division. This was worth it, because he won the European title with four wins. In the final he defeated the Bulgarian Georgi Georgiev with 4: 1 judges' votes on points. That was his first big success at international championships. At the end of 1977 Henryk Srednicki won the flyweight competition in Warsaw at the 1st Feliks Stamm tournament, which was held in Warsaw in memory of the Polish boxing coach Feliks Stamm , with a victory in the final over the Hungarian Sandor Orban .
In 1978, Henryk Średnicki beat Henryk Czerwinski in the final of the Polish flyweight championships in a successful revenge and won his fourth Polish championship title among seniors. He then celebrated his greatest success of his career at the World Championships in Belgrade . He became world champion flyweight . He beat Vaclav Hornak from Czechoslovakia , Sandor Orban, Alexander Michailow from the Soviet Union and Héctor Ramírez from Cuba on points. Henryk Srednicki is the only Polish boxer who has won a world title since the introduction of the World Boxing Championships in 1974. Towards the end of the year he won the flyweight final over his compatriot Leszek Błażyński at the 2nd Feliks-Stamm-Tournament in Warsaw .
Henryk Średnicki won his fifth Polish championship title in 1979, although he did not have to compete in the final against Stanislaw Syjud because he was injured. At the European Championships this year in Cologne , he then continued his series of successes. He became European flyweight champion in Cologne , for which he won victories over Nuri Eroglu from Turkey , Alexander Dugarow from the Soviet Union and Daniel Radu from Romania . Towards the end of 1979 he was then surprisingly defeated in the final against the young Romanian Constantin Titoiu on points at the 3rd Feliks Stamm tournament in Warsaw .
At the Polish Championships in 1980 Henryk Średnicki was defeated in the flyweight division in the semifinals against Ryszard Czerwinski. Nevertheless, he was sent to the Olympic Games in Moscow , but could not convince there. After a clear win on points over Webby Mwango from Zambia, he was defeated in the quarterfinals against the Soviet athlete Viktor Miroschnitschenko and with 5th place was again without an Olympic medal.
After these Olympic Games, Henryk Średnicki did not start at any international championships. He was also absent from the Polish championships in 1981, but won the tournament for the black diamond in Sosnowiec in the final over Edward Maczuga, Poland, on points.
In 1982 he was the last Polish champion, this time in the bantamweight division. He beat it in the final Sławomir Zapart on points. At the Polish championships in 1983 he lost in the bantamweight semifinals against Sławomir Żeromiński on points and retired at the Polish championships in 1985, the last he played, against the same boxer in the quarterfinals. In 1984 he represented the Polish colors again in an international match in Danzig against the Federal Republic of Germany and won the bantamweight division over Stefan Gertel from Worms on points.
After 1985 Henryk Średnicki ended his career. He attended the trainer academy in Myszków and worked there as a trainer. One of his students was Łukasz Maszczyk , who came to the quarter-finals at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing in light flyweight.
Henryk Średnicki was also active in politics, but ran in vain for a seat in the Sejm in the 2005 parliamentary elections .
