Stefan Gertel
Stefan Gertel (born May 12, 1960 in Worms ) is a former German boxer .
Career
Stefan Gertel only started boxing at the age of 16 in 1976 at the Turngemeinde 1846 Worms . He comes from a large family, from which his brother Helmut Gertel Boxer and, like him, also became German master of amateurs. Stefan Gertel's trainers in Worms were Erich Kress and Kurt Fink. In the national team, these were Dieter Wemhöner and Helmut Ranze . Stefan Gertel learned the profession of office clerk, but during part of his boxer career he was a contract soldier in the German Armed Forces, where he was a member of the sports promotion company in Mannheim. He was a technically gifted boxer who only sometimes lacked the necessary toughness required for a boxer of the absolute world class at crucial moments in his career.
Stefan Gertel was German junior champion as early as 1977 and in 1978 for the first time German champion in the senior class in paper weight (class up to 48 kg body weight). He won this flyweight title in 1979 and bantamweight from 1980 to 1983. He won other German championship titles in 1985 and 1988 in featherweight.
Stefan Gertel made his first start at an international championship at the European Amateur Championship in 1979 in Cologne. He started there in the paper weight category and won over Ion Boboc from Romania on points. In the quarterfinals he lost to Georgi Georgiev from Bulgaria just on points (2: 3 judges' votes) and thus finished 5th.
After Stefan Gertel could not take part in the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow because of the boycott of these games by the German sports management, he started again in 1981 at the European Championships, which took place in Tampere . He won there in bantamweight over Misoslav Vrba from the ČSSR (5: 0) and Metodi Metow from Bulgaria (5: 0) on points and was defeated in the semifinals by the Yugoslav Sami Buzoli (0: 5), with which he won an EM bronze medal. This was to remain the greatest success in Stefan Gertel's career. Stefan Gertel also boxed at the CISM military world championships in Jacksonville / USA in 1981 . The countries that did not belong to the Warsaw Pact or did not sympathize with it were united in the CISM. Seen in this way, military sport was divided into two parts in those years. In Jacksonville he got to the final, in which he was defeated by the Thai Payoo Pooltarat on points.
At the 1982 World Cup in Munich , Stefan Gertel was eliminated in the bantamweight division in the round of 16. He lost there again against Sami Buzoli on points (1: 4) and also at the European Championship 1983 in Varna was his last stop in the round of 16, when he clearly lost on points (0: 5) against Kostadin Georgiev from Bulgaria. In 1983 he was again CISM military vice world champion.
Stefan Gertel had bad luck at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . Since most of the strong boxers from the Eastern Bloc countries were missing there, he figured he had a good chance of winning a medal. But already in his first fight against Frenchman Louis Gomis he was hit so hard on the chin in the first round that he suffered a broken jaw. The Olympic Games were over for him. After a long break from injury, he returned to the ring in 1985, but was never able to regain the shape of 1984. Until 1990 he played many Bundesliga fights for the CSC Frankfurt (Main) . In his career he fought over 300 fights, of which he remained victorious in 275 fights.
