Dieter Wemhöner (born August 18, 1930 in Berlin ) is a former German boxer . He was European champion of amateurs in 1953 in Warsaw in middleweight.

Career

Amateur career

Dieter Wemhöner started boxing in 1947 at the "Sportgemeinschaft Karlshorst" (SGK), a Berlin sports club. The relatively tall and slim boxer, who was an excellent technician, developed quickly and was the first (overall) Berlin champion in the middleweight division in 1950. After the division of the city also had an impact on boxing, he switched to "Tennis Borussia", a club in West Berlin. Dieter Wemhöner, who had attended high school in Berlin, learned the trade of toolmaker. At the beginning of 1951 he was included for the first time in a list of the best German amateur boxers published by the DABV.

In a taking place on March 25, 1951 in Alsfeld elimination of the DABV for the European championship in Milan , Dieter Wemhöner defeated Gudat from Regensburg in the middleweight division on points. In another elimination tournament he lost to Günter Sladky from Dorsten on April 14, 1951 in Kassel , who therefore became Germany's representative in Milan. In the German championship in 1951, Dieter Wemhöner could not compete due to an injury.

In the spring of 1952 a team of the US "Golden Gloves" winners was in the Federal Republic of Germany , which competed against a city selection in Berlin . Dieter Wemhöner met Carl Blair, against whom he lost just on points. At the German championship in 1952, Dieter Wemhöner defeated Sturm from Frechen in the semifinals and Max Resch from Stuttgart in the final, each clearly on points and thus became German middleweight champion for the first time. Since he defeated Sturm again in the following Olympic qualification, Dieter Wemhöner was sent to the Olympic Games in Helsinki . In Helsinki, Dieter Wemhöner defeated the Czech Bedrich Koutny on points in the second round, but lost to the Bulgarian Boris Nikolow on points in the quarter-finals and was eliminated without a medal.

In 1953 Dieter was also used at the European Championships in Warsaw . He started there again in the middleweight division. Dieter Wemhöner was in excellent shape. He defeated the dangerous Romanian Vasile Tiță in the quarterfinals and won the semifinals over the Swedish defending champion Stig Sjölin on points. In the final he faced Bedrich Koutny, against whom he was able to repeat his point win from the Olympic Games and became European champion. For this, the Federal President awarded him the Silver Laurel Leaf on May 24, 1953.

Following this European Championship, a European selection traveled to the United States and played there two comparative fights. Dieter Wemhöner represented Europe in the middleweight division. At the first start in Chicago he was defeated by the American Tate, but was able to win against Stephan on points at the second start in St. Louis . On the return trip from the USA , the European selection in Dublin competed against Ireland . Dieter Wemhöner defeated Lavery safely on points.

In 1953 Dieter Wemhöner also won his second German championship title. He defeated Erich Schöppner from Witten in the semi-finals, somewhat controversial, and clearly won on points in the final against Klenz from Lübeck .

1954 was a year without international championships. For this reason, the German championships were the highlight of the season. Dieter Wemhöner became German middleweight champion for the third time. In the final he defeated Rolf Peters from Dorstfeld clearly on points.

In 1955 the German championships took place before the European championship, which was held in Berlin that year. Dieter Wemhöner had bad luck at the German championship because he injured himself and could not compete in his semi-final fight against Ernst Melchior from Freising , so that he had to give up his German championship title without a fight. However, by the time of the European Championship he had recovered from his injury, so that he could start in Berlin. He met there after two victories in the semifinals on the Soviet athlete Gennadj Ivanovich Schatkow . He gave this strong boxer an even fight and was disputed on points. The dream of defending the title was over, but at least he won the European Championship bronze medal.

At the German championship in 1956, Dieter Wemhöner was injured again. However, he was able to compete in the all-German Olympic qualification and defeated Paul Nickel from Schwerin and Rolf Peters on points and had thus fought for the ticket to Melbourne . In Melbourne, Dieter Wemhöner won in the preliminary round over Briton Ron Redrup on points, but lost in the quarter-finals to the unorthodox boxing Argentine Victor Salazar and therefore had to retire. He was thus again without an Olympic medal. After the Olympic Games in Melbourne, Dieter Wemhöner decided to become an amateur professional boxer after 169 fights.

As an amateur, he also contested the following international matches:

  • April 27, 1952 in Dortmund , Germany against Iran , points winner over Tusi,
  • October 31, 1952 in Dublin , Ireland against FRG, points winner over Norton,
  • August 28, 1953 in Wiesbaden , Germany against Italy , draw against Finiletti,

Profile career

At the end of 1956 Dieter Wemhöner signed a professional contract with Fritz Gretzschel, one of the most famous German managers in professional boxing. He played his first professional fight on March 2, 1957 in Oldenburg , clearly defeating Herbert Sowa on points. Dieter Wemhöner won 18 of his next 19 fights and fought once in a draw. The most notable victory was that over the Finns Pekka Kokkonen , whom he defeated on February 3, 1958 in Helsinki on points. Against Pekka Kokkonen Dieter Wemhöner had to accept his first defeat as a professional. On December 1, 1959 he was defeated in Helsinki in his 20th professional fight on points.

In the period that followed, Dieter Wemhöner also achieved some impressive victories. On November 21, 1959, he defeated the ex-European champion Giulio Rinaldi in the Palazzo dello Sporto in Milan after 10 rounds on points and in another encounter against Pekko Kokkonen he defeated this on January 23, 1960 in Berlin on points. He suffered a bitter defeat on November 5, 1960 in Sweden against Lennart Risberg , against whom he was knocked out in the 9th round.

On November 3, 1961 Dieter Wemhöner fought against Helmut Ball for the German championship in the light heavyweight division. He did not get beyond a draw in this fight, so Ball remained German champions. This was the only championship fight that Dieter Wemhöner contested as a professional boxer. On November 24, 1961 he was defeated in Rome in the revenge against Giulio Rinaldi on points and ended after another victorious fight against the Dutchman Gertt van Eyck on December 2, 1961 his boxer career.

Career as a coach

After finishing his boxer career, Dieter Wemhöner initially worked in the cosmetics industry. On January 1, 1967, he took up his position as national coach in the German Amateur Boxing Association, which he kept for 25 years. His work as a trainer was marked by many great successes. Under his aegis, German boxers became Olympic champions, world and European champions and medalists.
