Stig Sjölin

Stig Sjölin (born December 21, 1928 in Värnamo , † January 9, 1995 in Helsingborg ) was a Swedish boxer . Sjölin was European champion in 1951 , silver medalist at the European Championships in 1949 and 1953, bronze medalist at the European Championships in 1953 and the Olympic Games in 1952 .

Career

Sjölin was next to Olle Tandberg the most successful Swedish boxer of all time. He contested 295 fights, of which he won 263, and was seven-time Swedish champion in 1949, 1951–54, 1956 and 1957.

In 1949 Sjölin took part in the European Championships for the first time and won the silver medal straight away, losing in the final to the Olympic champion of 1948, the Hungarian László Papp . At the European Championships two years later, he was European middleweight champion (-75 kg) with a final victory over West German Günter Sladky . As the European title holder, Sjölin was automatically qualified for the 1952 Olympic Games , in which he reached the semi-finals after victories over the Finn Börje Grönroos (3-0) and the Australian Anthony Madigan (3-0), which he did against the American Floyd Patterson (DQ 3rd) lost and won the Olympic bronze medal.

After this success, Sjölin also took part in the European Championships in 1953 , but this time failed in the semifinals to Dieter Wemhöner from West Berlin (2: 1). After winning the Nordic Championships in 1955, he also won the silver medal at the 1955 European Championships in the same year . His opponent in the final was the Soviet athlete Gennady Shatkov . The following year Sjölin took part in the Olympic Games again, but this time did not get beyond the first fight, which he lost against the Argentine Víctor Zalazar .

1957 Sjölin won again the Nordic championships and then withdrew from active sport.
