Vasile Tiță

Vasile Tita J. (* 21st February 1928 in Bucharest ; † 24. June 2013 ) was a Romanian boxer in the middleweight division. He was a silver medalist at the 1952 Olympics .

Career

Tiță had his first major international appearance in May 1950 at the international tournament that took place in Warsaw on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Polish Boxing Association . Tiță lost there in the semifinals against the reigning Olympic and European champion László Papp . In September 1950 Tiță lost in front of 15,000 spectators in the Bucharest Stadionul Republicii as part of an international match against Czechoslovakia against the reigning Olympic champion Július Torma in the weight class up to 67 kg.

In 1952 the boxer, who was nicknamed Prințul din Obor ("Prince of Obor"), started at the 15th Summer Olympics in Helsinki . He defeated Willie Duggan from Ireland, Nelson Andrade from Brazil, Walter Sentimenti from Italy and Boris Nikolow from Bulgaria before giving up in the final against Floyd Patterson from the USA after 20 seconds.

At the European Championships in Warsaw in 1953 , he lost in the quarter-finals against Dieter Wemhöner . Even at the European Championships in West Berlin in 1955, he was defeated in the quarter-finals against Bedřich Koutný . At the European Championships in Prague in 1957 , he had to admit defeat to the Belgian Victor Raes in the preliminary battle. However, he still won a bronze medal at the 1st international army championships in the GDR.

Tiță was between 1951 and 1957 seven times in a row Romanian champions: 1951 to 1953 and 1955 to 1957 in the light middleweight (71 kg) and 1954 in the middleweight division. He suffered from Alzheimer's disease for the last ten years of his life .
