amateur

In his native Romania , Lunka was national champion and vice European junior champion in 1988. In 1989 he moved to Germany to the boxing club Bavaria Landshut . After an interlude in Austria in 1992, he moved to SV Halle in 1993 . There he was able to celebrate some victories. In autumn 1995 Lunka had to undergo a disc operation in Schlierbach. During this time there were contacts to the Badischer Verband, which led to Lunka joining KSV Schriesheim in spring 1996 . He also trained for higher tasks at the Olympic base in Heidelberg .

Lunka won the chemistry cup three times in a row from 1993 to 1995. While he played the tournament under the Austrian flag in 1993 , he has boxed for Germany since 1994. In 1994 and 1995 he was then German flyweight champion.

In 1995 he became amateur world champion in Berlin and defeated the Kazakh Bolat Schumadilow in the final . In 1996 he failed to get a medal at the European Championships in Vejle . At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta he won bronze, where he was defeated in the semi-finals by Kazakhs Shumadilov.

professional

In 1996, Lunka switched to the professional camp. However, his further career was disappointing. In March 1997 he lost to the South African Charles Mailula on points. He won a total of 21 fights, thirteen of them against opponents with a negative match record. On March 24, 2003 he boxed against the Mexican Fernando Montiel for the WBO world flyweight championship, lost by technical knockout in the seventh round and then ended his career.

After his active professional career, Lunka moved to the coaching staff at the Heidelberg Olympic Training Center in 2003. Today he still works closely with KSV Schriesheim. Schriesheim not only gave him sporting security, the environment in Schriesheim also helped him to achieve more stability in his private life, so that Lunka could prepare intensively for his participation in the Olympics.
