Román Alberto González Luna , known as Roman Gonzalez (born June 17, 1987 in Managua , Nicaragua ) is a Nicaraguan professional boxer and former world champion of the WBA in minimum and light flyweight, as well as former world champion of the WBC in fly and super flyweight. After Floyd Mayweather Jr. stepped down in September 2015, Ring Magazine named him the best boxer regardless of weight class .

Since February 2020 he has been WBA super flyweight world champion.

Amateur career

Roman Gonzalez won each of his 88 fights as an amateur and was gold medalist at the 2004 Central American Championships in Costa Rica .

Professional career

As a professional, he was unbeaten in 46 fights between 2005 and 2017. In September 2008, he won the WBA minimum weight (straw weight) title against Yutaka Niida and defended it three times. In October 2010 he defeated Francisco Rosas in the fight for the interim WBA light flyweight title and was named full world champion in February 2011. He defended the title five times and was upgraded to super world champion in September 2012.

In September 2014, he beat Akira Yaegashi and became the WBC flyweight title holder. After four title defenses, he secured the WBC super flyweight title against Carlos Cuadras in September 2016 . In his first title defense, he lost on points against Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in March 2017 , which was followed by a rematch in September 2017. Gonzalez lost this by knockout in the fourth round.

On February 29, 2020, he defeated the previously undefeated Khalid Yafai and won his WBA world title in super flyweight.
