Khalid Saeed Yafai (born June 11, 1989 in Birmingham ) is an English professional boxer and former WBA world champion in super flyweight .

Amateur career

Khalid Yafai started boxing as a teenager with his two years younger brother Gamal Yafai . His younger brother Galal Yafai is also a boxer. He was a member of the Birmingham City Police ABC (amateur boxing club) and was trained there by Frank O'Sullivan.

Already in his youth he achieved numerous successes in amateur boxing. In 2005 he became the first English boxer to win the Cadet World Championships (weight class up to 48 kg) with a final victory over Luis Yáñez , whereupon he was voted "Junior Sportsman of the Year" by BBC Midlands . At the Junior World Championships in 2006 he defeated Ferhat Pehlivan , among others, and was only eliminated in the quarter-finals against Cuban Alexei Collado, who later also won the gold medal. Also in 2006, at the age of 17, he won the English adult championship light flyweight by beating Paul Butler in the final .

He was also the silver medalist of the 2005 Cadet European Championships (up to 48 kg) and the 2007 European Junior Championships (up to 51 kg), with victories against Andrew Selby and Artur Grigoryan .

As the youngest British boxer, he took part in the 2007 World Championships in Chicago , where he failed in the second fight against two-time Asian champion Violito Payla. In 2008 he took part in the European Olympic qualification in Italy and secured a starting place by winning against Mo Nasir from Welsh and Igor Samojlenko from Moldova. At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , he was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Cuban Andry Laffita .

In 2008 he won the silver flyweight medal at the EU championships and in 2009 the gold medal at the same event. At the 2009 World Championships in Milan he was only defeated in the quarter-finals against the German Ronny Beblik , but defeated this in the semifinals of the European Championships in Moscow in 2010 , whereby he reached the final. There he lost to the Russian Michail Alojan and was runner-up in the European flyweight division.

In 2011 he was eliminated from the European Championships in Ankara against Michael Conlan , but reached a World Cup quarter-finals again at the World Championships in Baku when he was able to beat Katsuaki Susa and Elías Emigdio. In the fight for the medal ranks he lost to Rau'Shee Warren .

Professional career

Khalid Yafai made his professional debut on July 7, 2012. He won the Commonwealth Championship against Yaqub Kareem in May 2014 and the IBF Intercontinental Super Flyweight Championship against Herald Molina in September 2014 . In October 2015, the British championship against Jason Cunningham followed and in March 2016 the intercontinental WBA championship with a knockout victory in the first round against Dixon Flores.

On December 10, 2016, he boxed in the Manchester Arena for the vacant WBA super flyweight championship, defeating Luis Concepción unanimously. He won his first title defense on October 28, 2017 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff against the undefeated Japanese Shō Ishida. In another title defense, he defeated David Carmona in May 2018. In his third defense of the title, he defeated the Mexican Israel Gonzalez in November 2018. In June 2019 he defeated Norbelto Jimenez in his fourth title defense.

He finally lost the world title on February 29, 2020 through a TKO defeat in the ninth round to Roman Gonzalez .
