Artur Razmikovich Grigoryan ( Armenian Արթուր Ռազմիկի Գրիգորյան Artur Grigorian Rasmiki , Russian Артур Размикович Григорян Artur Grigorian Rasmikowitsch , English Artur Grigorian * 20th October 1967 in Tashkent , Uzbek SSR , Soviet Union ) is a former Uzbek boxer of Armenian origin and boxing trainer.

amateur

Grigoryan completed a long amateur career with 384 fights. In 1990 he won the Goodwill Games in Seattle , including defeating the American Shane Mosley . His greatest success as an amateur boxer was a second place in the lightweight at the World Championships in Sydney , where he was defeated by Marco Rudolph in the final . He took part in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , but was eliminated in the second fight against the South Korean Hong Sung-sik.

Professional career

Grigoryan turned pro at Universum Boxing Promotion in 1994 . After 18 successful development fights, he won the vacant WBO lightweight title on April 13, 1996 against Antonio Rivera. Rivera at least had a knockout success over Giovanni Parisi , but was not among the world class due to a total of nine defeats (including in the rematch with Parisi). Rivera had Grigoryan on the ground, but Grigoryan won in round twelve by knockout.

He defended the title 17 times against second- to third-rate opponents and was not listed in the top ten in Ring Magazine for a long time, despite being “world champion” . The best-known opponents were the Argentine Raúl Balbi, at that time a completely blank slate, but years later briefly held the WBA title, the completely disappointing professional German amateur world champion Marco Rudolph and the 36-year-old Italian European champion Stefano Zoff. Against the Colombian Pitalua, unknown despite the 30-1 record, Grigoryan was down twice again.

Scandal fight against Zegan

In 2003, one of the most controversial fights in recent German boxing history occurred when Grigoryan was awarded victory in Essen against the once again completely unknown Pole Matt Zegan. Promoter Kohl said: “I feel so uncomfortable. There was no way Artur won. It leaves a bland aftertaste. "The Universum website reported:" Indeed, the 35-year-old Grigoryan didn't seem to find a recipe against his nine-year-old challenger for long stretches of the fight. Zegan marched through the world champion's blows, drove Grigoryan forward with powerful attacks, and landed a multitude of precise hits. [...] Driven by the courage of desperation, Grigoryan increased the pace in the final laps and tried repeatedly to land knockout hits, while he had to repeatedly wipe the blood from his eyes to be able to recognize his target again. But Zegan, who raised his arms triumphantly when Grigoryan lost his mouthguard in lap eleven, marched forward to the end of the fight and looked fresher and more fresh at the age of 26. "

The house newspaper of Grigoryan, who lives in Hamburg, the Hamburger Abendblatt , said: “Arthur Ellensohn and Joachim Jacobsen saw 'King Artur' as the clear winner in his 17th title defense against Matt Zegan from Poland on Saturday in Essen's Grugahalle. They had this assessment exclusively. Even the greatest Grigoryan supporters had hoped for a draw at best. "

The taz assessed: “Actually, Pole Matt Zegan had won the World Championship match against defending champion Artur Grigoryan, who lives in Hamburg, and yet he was declared a loser. Yesterday's boxing evening [...] was tarnished by the obvious misjudgment in the lightweight title duel according to the version of the World Boxing Organization (WBO). "

"I feel cheated. For me, Grigoryan and Universe are cheats, ”said Zegan after the fight. “I had to do without two months, my family, my child - all for one goal. I do not understand this judgment. "

"I'll give him revenge," said the Uzbek after the fight. Once again Kohl: “The verdict is unpleasant. Now it is again speculated that we would postpone the fights, "said the universe boss, who immediately offered the unrestrained Zegan a revenge. “We are also coming to Poland. We have to straighten something out. "

But the promised rematch never came.

Loss of title

The undefeated Brazilian Acelino Freitas was the first opponent to be ranked in the top ten in Ring Magazine , albeit a class lower in super featherweight. Before the fight, Fritz Sdunek said : “It's our chance that no one trusts Artur anymore. But every opponent can be beaten. And the preparation made me very optimistic. ”But Grigoryan clearly lost to Freitas and was down twice.

He still fought a victorious non-title fight and then ended his career.

Trainer

After the end of his boxing career in 2004, he initially became assistant to coach Sdunek at Universum and remained there until the boxing stable went bankrupt in 2012. Gregoryan looked after the heavyweights Ruslan Chagayev and Jack Culcay-Keth as head coach . He later worked as a trainer at the ITS boxing stable. When the Universum boxing stable was revived, he became the head coach, and he had also coached the new managing director Ismail Özen .

Private life

The father of four got into financial difficulties in 2002, among other things because he lost large sums of money through real estate deals.
