Marco Rudolph (born May 22, 1970 in Zittau ) is a former German boxer .
Amateur career
Rudolph boxed as an amateur for BC Cottbus and became GDR featherweight champion in 1987 and 1989 and German lightweight champion in 1991, 1992 and 1994 .
His first international success was winning the European Junior Championships in Gdansk in 1988 . At the European Senior Championships in Athens in 1989 he finished second, and in 1991 in Gothenburg he was third.
In 1991 he became amateur world champion in Sydney under coach Ulli Wegner . In the first fight of the tournament he won against Óscar de la Hoya and in the final he defeated Artur Grigorian . At the 1993 World Cup in Tampere , Rudoplh, who completed an apprenticeship as a chef in the early 1990s, lost in the second fight against the eventual world champion, the Cuban Damián Austin . He finished the 1995 World Cup in Berlin in third, defeating Diego Corrales in the first fight .
In addition, Rudolph took part in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona for Germany and won the silver medal after losing to Óscar de la Hoya in the final this time.
Professional career
In July 1995 Marco Rudolph signed a contract with Universum Box-Promotion , his first professional fight took place on August 19, 1995.
After thirteen wins, he got on March 14, 1998 against his stable mate Artur Grigorian the opportunity to box for the WBO title. In the fight, however, he had no chance and lost by technical knockout in the sixth round.
In August 1998 Rudolph finally retired from boxing.
After boxing
Rudolph later described the fact that he ended his boxing career without knowing what he wanted to do afterwards as "stupid". In the following years he worked, among other things, as a fitness trainer, butcher and tavern manager, in March 2008 he filed for personal bankruptcy. In March 2009, Rudolph had to go to prison for failure to pay child support and was incarcerated for 95 days. His former coach Ulli Wegner agreed to pay Rudolph's maintenance debts and thus helped him out of prison early.
