Alexander Ivanovich Maletin ( Russian Александр Иванович Малетин ; born February 6, 1975 in Tolmachevo, Sverdlovsk Oblast , Soviet Union ) is a former Russian boxer .

Alexander Maletin grew up in Nizhnevartovsk and started boxing there as a teenager. He was a member of the Dynamo sports organization. His coaches were Wassili and Ruslan Wolfow. He is the recipient of the Honored Master of Sport award and the Order of Merit for the Fatherland .

Amateur career

Maletin became the Russian lightweight champion in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2002, and the Russian light welterweight champion in 2003. His first major success was winning the 1997 World Championships in Hungary . He defeated among others Dimitar Schtiljanow , Kay Huste and Tümentsetsegiin Üitümen. In 1998 he was eliminated from the European Championships in Belarus against Gheorghe Lungu, but won a bronze medal at the Goodwill Games in the USA . He was defeated in the semifinals against Mario Kindelán .

In 2000 he won the European Championships in Finland , this time he was able to beat Gheorghe Lungu, as well as Selim Paliani and Filip Palić , among others . He then took part in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and reached the semifinals with three victories, including again against Selim Paliani, where he was eliminated again by Mario Kindelán and won a bronze medal. He won another bronze medal at the 2001 World Championships in Northern Ireland . After victories against Selim Paliani, Gheorghe Lungu and Tulkunbay Turgunov, he only failed in the semi-finals against Kindelán.

At the European Championships in Russia in 2002 he fought his way to the final against Gyula Káté , Filip Palić and Harun Sipahi and beat Boris Georgiev by knockout in the first round in the duel for the gold medal . Also at the 2003 World Championships in Thailand he achieved five wins, including the final in the semifinals against Manus Boonjumnong , but lost there against Willy Blain and became vice world champion.

In 2004 he won the European Championships in Croatia , but his final opponent Ihor Pashchuk had not started the fight due to an injury. His participation in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens ended after losing to Willy Blain in the round of 16.
