He received a bye for each of the two preliminary rounds and only had to enter the round of 16, where he defeated the Spaniard Bienvenido Alloza, who had not yet appeared internationally, by breaking off in the first round. In the subsequent quarter-finals he met the Pan-American runner-up from Argentina Matias Ferreyra, whom he could only just beat with 42:36 on points. In the semi-finals, he lost to Vladimir Kolesnik from Ukraine prematurely in the third round and ended up in third place.

Further successes at major international events were third place at the EU championships in 2005 and 2009, as well as second place at the 2009 Mediterranean Games in Pescara . At the European Championships in 2002, 2006, 2008 and 2010, as well as at the World Championships in 2005 and 2009, he was eliminated before reaching the semi-finals.
