The II. Summer Military World Games (officially 2nd CISM Military World Games ) took place from August 8 to 17 in Zagreb , Croatia instead. The Games were played by the World Military Sports Association ( Conseil International du Sport Militaire ) based on the model of the Summer Olympics .

A total of 6,734 athletes from 82 nations took part in competitions in 20 sports.

Competitions were held in athletics , basketball , fencing , boxing , judo , wrestling , swimming , water polo , diving , horse riding , triathlon , shooting , cycling , volleyball , soccer and modern pentathlon . In addition, competitions in the military sports of parachuting , lifeguarding , military pentathlon and maritime pentathlon were held.

A total of 42 hours of the competitions were broadcast on television, twelve of them live. Among other things, a press conference was held with the chairman of the IOC Juan Antonio Samaranch .
