Julio César González Ibarra (born July 30, 1976 in Guerrero Negro , Baja California Sur , Mexico , † March 10, 2012 with Guerrero Negro) was a Mexican boxer . He became the 2003 WBO light heavyweight champion.

Career

González took part in the 1996 Olympic Games , but lost in the preliminary round in the light heavyweight division to the southpaw and later Olympic champion Vasily Schirow prematurely. He turned professional the following year. After winning four years against nameless opponents, he met the American Julian Letterlough in 2001 . Both opponents were down several times in the fight, González won on points and was classified as "world class" in the independent rankings, especially that of the Ring Magazine . In the same year he was allowed to box against Roy Jones for the WBA , WBC and IBF World Championships, but clearly lost this fight on points.

In 2003 he won against Glen Johnson on points. Then González got the opportunity to box for the WBO title and surprisingly defeated the previously undefeated Poland Dariusz Michalczewski on points. In 2004 he lost the WBO title in his first title defense to the Hungarian Zsolt Erdei . He also failed in two title fights against IBF world champion Clinton Woods in 2005 and 2007.

In March 2012, González died in a motorcycle accident.
