Clinton Woods (born May 1, 1972 in Sheffield ) is a British boxer and former IBF light heavyweight champion.

Professional career

Clinton Woods began his professional career in 1994, initially in the super middleweight division . In December 1997, he won the Commonwealth title in this weight class, but lost the belt in his first title defense by losing points to David Starie. After this first defeat, he moved to the light heavyweight division.

In 1999 he won the Commonwealth and European championship titles in the light heavyweight division. In 2001 he won an elimination match from the WBC and qualified for a fight against world champion Roy Jones Jr. This fight took place on September 7, 2002 in Portland . Woods was hopelessly inferior to Jones, however, so Woods' coach eventually threw in the towel in the sixth round.

In 2003 Antonio Tarver was stripped of the IBF title because he failed to comply with his mandatory defense. Woods then got the opportunity to box on November 7, 2003 against the Jamaican Glen Johnson for the now vacant belt. The clash ended in a draw, however, and a rematch was scheduled three months later. This time Johnson prevailed just on points and secured the title.

Johnson was also stripped of the title a little later, as he next faced Tarver instead of the association's mandatory challenger. Woods was again allowed to fight for the vacant belt and finally won it on March 4, 2005 against Rico Hoye. In the following years he defended the title twice against, among others, the Michalczewski -Bezwinger González and in a third match against Glen Johnson. On April 12, 2008 Woods lost the IBF title by a clear point defeat to Antonio Tarver.

In February 2009, he defeated the Kosovar Albanian Elvir Muriqi on points in an elimination match for the position of the IBF mandatory challenger . This gave him another chance to fight for the IBF belt, which was vacant again on August 28, 2009. He was defeated in this fight, however, by the American Tavoris Cloud after a unanimous decision on points.
