Andrew Selby (* 25. December 1988 in Cardiff ) is a Welsh professional boxer in the flyweight . He is the brother of boxer Lee Selby . As an amateur, he was European champion in 2011 and 2013, vice world champion in 2011, quarter-finalist at the 2012 Olympic Games and third at the 2013 World Cup.

Amateur career

Andrew Selby was one of the best amateur boxers in the history of sports in Wales and trained at Splott ABC (Amateur Boxing Club). He won 14 Welsh and seven British championships in his age and weight class and was a member of the UK national team for nine years.

At the Junior World Championships in Morocco in 2006 he was only eliminated in the quarter-finals against Vasyl Lomatschenko , who later became two-time Olympic champion. He then started at the 2007 World Championships in Chicago , but lost in the first fight against the reigning Asian champion Violito Payla.

In 2008 he first started bantamweight at the 2008 European Championships in Liverpool . With wins against Nebojša Rosić and Mateusz Mazik, he reached the semi-finals, where he lost to Detelin Dalakliew and was eliminated with a bronze medal. At the 2009 World Championships in Milan , he was eliminated again in the second preliminary round against Detelin Dalakliew, who also secured the world title.

At the European Championships in Moscow in 2010 , he again won a bronze medal after he was eliminated in the semifinals against the reigning European champion Heorhij Tschyhajew . He had previously defeated Pedro Matos and Furkan Ulaş . He also won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Championships in India .

For the 2011 World Championships in Baku , he switched back to flyweight and beat Hesham Abdelaal, Severiane Chiladze, Chatchai Butdee , Michael Conlan and Jasurbek Latipov , which made him into the final. There he lost to Michail Alojan at 12:13 . He also won the 2011 European Championships in Ankara with victories against Norbert Kalucza , Elie Konki , Alexander Riscan and three-time European champion Georgi Balakschin .

As reigning European champion and runner-up world champion, he started as one of the favorites at the 2012 Olympic Games in London . In the last sixteen he prevailed against Ilyas Süleimenow , but lost in the quarter-finals to the Pan American champion and later Olympic champion, Robeisy Ramirez .

At the European Championships in Minsk in 2013 , he won his second European title in a row after defeating Michael Conlan again in the final . In the semifinals he had defeated Elvin Məmişzadə , in the quarterfinals Ronny Beblik and in the second round Alexander Alexandrow. He also won a bronze medal at the 2013 World Championships in Almaty . Against Malik Jackson, Gerardo Cervantes and Ilyas Süleimenow he had reached the semi-finals, where he was eliminated with 1: 2 against Jasurbek Latipov .

World Series of Boxing

From 2012 to 2015 he boxed in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) and won nine out of ten fights. In 2012/13 he reached fifth place with the British Lionhearts team and 2013/14 with the Italia Thunder team .

Professional career

Under the manager and promoter Chris Sanigar Selby switched to the professional camp in September 2015 and won his debut on October 30, 2015. In his only fifth fight, he won the British flyweight championship on May 14, 2016 against Louis Norman. On November 18, 2016, he won the IBF Inter-Continental title against Jake Bornea .

On February 4, 2017, he defeated Ardin Diale in the fight for the WBC International title and in May 2017 also defeated the later WBC world champion Cristofer Rosales . In October 2017 he defeated Maximino Flores in a final WBC World Championship eliminator.

On March 23, 2019, however, he lost by knockout in the fifth round against the Mexican Julio Aguilar.
