Luis Jason Yáñez (born December 25, 1988 in Duncanville , Texas ) is an American boxer . He was Pan-American champion of the amateurs in 2007 in light flyweight .

Career

Luis Yáñez attended Duncanville High School. He started boxing at the age of 10, encouraged by his athletic father. Luis Yáñez is a left wingman and developed into one of the best American amateur boxers as a junior. It is very light and starts at light flyweight (class up to 48 kg body weight), but has to be very disciplined to be able to bring this weight. After the Olympic Games in 2008, for which he is already qualified, he will probably start one weight class higher. His coach in Duncanville is Dennis Rodarte.

Luis Yáñez won the largest American junior light flyweight tournament in Brownsville in 2005 with a point win (17: 7) in the final over Joel Narváez from Puerto Rico . He then started for the US Boxing Association at the World Cadet Championship (up to the age of 17) in Liverpool . In the light flyweight division he won there over Sonny Upton from Ireland (10: 8), Vasily Batalow, Russia (12:10) and Sakem Sydyrow from Kazakhstan (22:19) on points. In the final, however, he was defeated by the Englishman Khalid Saeed Yafai and was thus junior vice world champion.

In 2006 Luis Yáñez won both the USA championship of the AAU and the National Golden Gloves in the light flyweight division. He defeated Roberto Ceron in the final battle . In the same year he also started for a junior world selection, which competed in Krasnoyarsk and Noginsk against a Russian junior selection. He won it in Krasnoyarsk against Galanow on points, but was defeated in Noginsk against Mikhail Alojan on points. At the Junior World Championship 2006 (Juniors = up to the age of 18) in Agadir , Luis Yáñez won another medal. He won there over Muhammad Nizar from Pakistan by breaking off in the 2nd round, over Mischa Alojan and John Joe Nevin from Ireland on points (22: 8 and 14:12) and lost in the semi-finals to Alexei Collado Acosta from Cuba on points (5:12).

In 2007 Luis Yáñez again won the USA championship and the National Golden Gloves in the light flyweight division. He won it in the final fights against Daniel Lozano (19: 8) and Francisco Ibarra on points. In the US elimination for the Pan American Championships in Colorado Springs , he won the final of the light flyweight over Roberto Cerón on points (13: 9). In an American qualifying tournament for the Pan American Games in Buenos Aires , Luis Yáñez first won against Jena-Michel Kind from Canada on points, but lost in the semifinals to Winston Méndez-Monteiro from the Dominican Republic, but qualified for these games. At the Pan American Games themselves, which were held in Rio de Janeiro , Luis Yáñez was in excellent shape. He first won over Paulo Carvalho from Brazil on points (19: 6) and celebrated a sensational victory over Cuban Yampier Hernández in the next fight , which he scored with 11: 8 goals. With points wins over Winston Méndez-Monteiro (13: 9) and Kevin Betancourt from Venezuela (14: 7), he then won the title.

He then started with high hopes at the World Championships in Chicago . First he came to a non-fighting victory over Simanga Shiba from South Africa and a demolition victory in the 2nd round over Stephen Sutherland from Australia . In the quarterfinals he was surprisingly defeated by Harry Tañamor from the Philippines with 7:17 goals and was eliminated. Together with three other boxers, he took 5th place, which was disappointing for him. In autumn 2007 Luis Yáñez won the decisive fight against Malcolm Franklin at the USA Trials for the 2008 Olympic Games in Colorado Springs in the light flyweight division and thus secured the starting place at these Olympic Games.

Finally, Luis Yáñez started for the US national relay in 2007 in two international matches that took place in Zunyi in China , albeit with a flyweight (up to 51 kg body weight). In the first fight he was defeated by the reigning light flyweight world champion, the Chinese Zhou Shiming by giving up in the 3rd round and also against the Kazak Olzhas Sattibajew he suffered a defeat, which was very close with 14:15 hits.

2008 did not start successfully for Luis Yáñez either. Because he was defeated in San Diego in an international match against the Mexican Odilión Zaleta on points (11:13). But he remained victorious in the last Olympic test of the US national relay in Bridgeport. He won there over Paulo Carvalho from Brazil on points.

At the Olympic Games 2008 he was able to defeat the Spaniard Kelvin de la Nieve in the first round and was eliminated in the second round with a defeat against the Mongols Pürewdordschiin Serdamba . This was also his last fight as an amateur boxer. Between 2009 and 2013, Yáñez played eight professional fights, of which he won seven.
